Baysox cruise to 6-1 victory

BaysoxThe Bowie Baysox combined shutdown pitching with a consistent offensive attack to earn a wire-to-wire 6-1 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils in front of 6,894 on Navy Night at Prince George’s Stadium Friday night.

Making his second home start as a member of the Baysox, RHP Dean Kremer earned the win by striking out six batters over five innings. The righty and his defense stranded seven batters during the first four innings, allowing the offense to get on the board. RHP Tanner Chleborad tossed two scoreless innings, while RHP Zach Pop allowed one unearned run over the final two innings.

The Baysox (51-58) jumped in front with a run in the second inning. Yusniel Diaz led off the frame with a double to left field and came around to score when Rylan Bannon grounded a Tyler Viza offering up the middle. The newest infielder recorded his sixth RBI as an Oriole minor leaguer in his 10th game.

Bowie tacked on another run in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 2-0. With one out, Anderson Feliz flared an opposite-field double into the left field corner. Aderlin Rodriguez, who had reached on a throwing error by third baseman Heiker Meneses, roared around third base to give Feliz his 34th RBI of 2018.

The even-inning scoring trend continued in the sixth inning. Diaz sent a deep RBI double just to the right of dead center field, eluding Adam Haseley. Ryan Mountcastle, who led off the frame with a single, came around to score on the 3rd Eastern League RBI–and second double of the game–for the right fielder.

The offense kept rolling in the seventh inning. Ryan Mountcastle grounded a first-pitch single to left field, playing Erick Salcedo. The third baseman has recorded at least one hit in nine of the past 11 games and recorded his first RBI since July 28 at Harrisburg.

Two more Baysox runs scored in the eighth inning without the benefit of a hit. On his birthday, Martin Cervenka drew one of five walks to score Diaz. A double play allowed Feliz to score his first run of the night and extend the hosts’ lead to 6-0.

Bowie and Reading continue their three-game series at 6:35 p.m. ET. Saturday night is Pirates and Princesses Night, featuring Ariel, Belle, The Beast and a crew of pirates. Fans can enjoy postgame fireworks, presented by NATELCO, and students from the surrounding counties will be honored for their participation in local libraries’ summer reading programs during the game.
