4 run first inning pushes Trenton past Bowie 7-2

BaysoxA four-run first helped lift the Trenton Thunder (33-21) to a 7-2 win over the Bowie Baysox (24-28) in the series opener on Friday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

In the afore-mentioned four-run first, Abiatal Avelino delivered an RBI triple, Bruce Caldwellfollowed with an RBI double and scored on Ryan McBroom’s RBI triple before Trey Amburgeyknocked home McBroom via a sac fly to open up a 4-0 advantage.

Bowie is just 2-10 in their last 12 games against Trenton dating back to last season.

The Baysox got a run back in the home half of the first as Anderson Feliz led off with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on Corban Joseph’s sac fly to cut the lead to 4-1.

Solo shots from Avelino and Rey Navarro in the top of the second extended Trenton’s lead to 6-1.

Baysox starter Hunter Harvey (1-2) allowed the six runs on five hits to go along with a walk in two innings of work.

Thunder starter Michael King (1-0) surrendered one run on three hits while walking one and fanning four in 7.0 IP.

Making a Major League Rehab appearance for Bowie, LHP Zach Britton retired the side in order in a perfect third. Britton threw eight pitches (six strikes) in the inning.

Feliz knocked in a run via an RBI single to bring the Baysox within 6-2 in the eighth.

Amburgey’s solo shot off of LHP Luis Ysla (2.0 IP, H, R, ER, BB, 3 K) in the top of the ninth made it a 7-2 game in favor of the Thunder.

Feliz (2-4, 2B, RBI, R) and Ryan Mountcastle (2-4) had a multi-hit game for manager Gary Kendall’s squad, while RHP Christian Binford (4.0 IP, 7 H, 4 K) had a scoreless outing in relief.

The series continues on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. as LHP Keegan Akin (5-4, 2.97) gets the start for Bowie against a starter yet to be determined for Trenton.
