3-Run eighth inning lifts Baysox to win in Richmond

BaysoxThe Bowie Baysox (24-26) rallied for three runs in the eighth and topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels (25-23) by a score of 7-5 in Tuesday’s series opener at The Diamond in Richmond.

In the top of the eighth, a single and an error charged to Richmond 1B Jerry Sands put runners at the corners with one out before Ryan Mountcastle reached on an error charged to Miguel Gomez which allowed the tying run to score. Ademar Rifaela followed Mountcastle with a go-ahead two-run double to give the Baysox a 7-5 lead.

RHP Dillon McNamara (1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER) was dealt the loss for the Flying Squirrels and falls to 0-1 on the year.

RHP Branden Kline (3.1 IP, H, BB, 3 K) earned the win for the Baysox with a scoreless outing in relief to improve to 1-0. The 3.1 IP for Kline marks his longest outing since tossing five innings on May 14, 2015 vs. Richmond.

The Baysox grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first when a single and a walk put two men on before Rifaela and Anthony Santander each delivered RBI singles.

In the home half of the third, Ali Castillo reached with a one-out single, went to third on a single and scored on Gomez’s sac fly to bring Richmond within a run at 2-1.

Aramis Garcia knocked in Sands with an RBI double in the fourth to tie things at two apiece.

Gomez gave the Flying Squirrels a 3-2 lead for the time being with a solo shot in the fifth off of Bowie starterLucas Long.

The Baysox quickly struck back with a pair of runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Anderson Feliz drew a one-out walk, advanced to third on a single and scored on Santander’s RBI single before Rifaela reached on a two-out walk later in the frame and a wild pitch charged to Richmond LHP Patrick Ruotolo (1.2 IP, BB, 2 K) brought home the go-ahead run in the form of Corban Joseph.

Squirrels starter Shaun Anderson (n/d) gave up the four runs on five hits to go along with two walks and five strikeouts in 5.1 IP.

Three straight singles started the sixth for Richmond and K.C. Hobson followed two batters later with a two-run double to give the hosts a 5-4 edge.

Long (n/d) surrendered five runs on 11 hits while fanning five in 5.2 IP.

Four different Baysox had multi-hit games: Joseph (2-4, SB, 3 R), Cedric Mullins (2-5, 3B, R), Rifaela (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI) and Santander (2-4, 2 RBI, SB, R).
