| April 16, 2018, 11:10 PM

The Bowie Baysox (6-4) rallied late, but fell short in a 4-2 loss to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (8-3) in the series opener of a four-game set on Monday night at The Diamond in Richmond.
Trailing 4-2, the Baysox had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth, but RHP Tyler Cyr (0.1 IP, K) came on in relief of RHP Ray Black (0.2 IP, H, 2 BB, 2 K) and fanned Mike Yastrzemski to end the game. Cyr notched his second save of the year.
Bowie had runners at second and third with one out in the eighth, but RHP Dusten Knight (1.0 IP, BB) got a pair of groundouts to limit the damage to just one run.
Richmond added a key insurance run in the home half of the eighth on Ronnie Jebavy’s sac fly that made it a 4-2 game in favor of the hosts.
The Flying Squirrels got on the board early with a pair of runs in the third as Luigi Rodriguez knocked in run via an RBI single and Jerry Sandsdelivered a run with an RBI groundout after a walk and a hit by pitch started the frame.
In the bottom of the fifth, Ali Castillo reached with a one-out single, stole second, went to third on a single and scored on Rodriguez’s RBI single to extend the Richmond lead to 3-0.
Baysox starter Michael Kelly (0-1) allowed the three runs on five hits to go along with two walks and seven strikeouts in 4.1 IP.
Ademar Rifaela drew a leadoff walk for the Baysox in the sixth, went to second on a single and took third on a walk issued to Yastrzemski before scoring on Martin Cervenka’s sac fly that cut the lead to 3-1.
Richmond starter Cory Taylor (2-0) gave up one run on five hits while walking three and fanning three in five innings of work.
Corban Joseph (3-4, 2B), Rifaela (2-3, 2 BB, 2 R) and Aderlin Rodriguez (2-4, BB) all had multi-hit games for the Baysox, while LHP Luis Gonzalez (2.0 IP, 3 H, BB, 4 K) had a scoreless outing in relief.
The series continues on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. as LHP John Means (0-0, 3.97) heads to the hill for Bowie against Richmond RHP Shaun Anderson(1-1, 3.27).
