Navy Basketball Season Kicks Off With a Win in Veterans Classic

| November 11, 2017, 11:04 AM

Navy Basketball got underway on Friday night during the fourth annual Veterans Classic in Alumni Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy.

The event is an opportunity for teams to for teams from around the country to get an opportunity to see what life is like for service academy athletes. The teams tour the “Yard” and observe the brigade form for chow at King Hall. Then, the teams got to tour a patrol boat, participate in a simulator of a Naval Ship and tour an MH-60S and Marine Humvee.

”Its just a very special opportunity to witness what goes on at the Naval Academy,” Said Memphis Head Coach Tubby Smith. “The commitment by everyone here is remarkable.”

Memphis and Alabama kicked things off with a physical opening game. Alabama took a two-point lead into the half and would win the game by 12, 82-70.

Navy squared off against ACC opponent Pitt for the second leg of the Veterans Classic. Navy shot 43% from the floor and 42% from beyond the arc in route to beating Pitt 71-62. A big reason for the Mids first win against an ACC opponent since 1971 was the 33 combined points from guards Bryce Dulin (18 points) and Shawn Anderson (15 points). Navy will play Miami on Sunday.
