Monsignor Slade unveils new STEM lab with new makerspace

Monsignor Slade Catholic School (MSCS) today announced a number of technology-focused enhancements aimed at creating a unique learning environment for current and future students. A new STEM Lab including a makerspace is now in operation after build-out over the summer by Bill Bon Contracting. The efforts to develop this exciting educational environment are led by Principal Alexa Cox and the MSCS School Board. The space allows students to experience a more hands-on STEM education.

In the MSCS STEM Lab makerspace area, students will take part in collaborative lessons using snap circuitry, the OWI robotic arm, Lego Robotics kits on the EV3 platform, Ozobots, and coding. In the lab, students are also able to create and design 3-D printed objects on Dremel 3-D printers. This STEM Lab will also serve as the inception point for new Technology and STEM Specialist Mrs. Kathleen Oleszczuk to establish a school-wide STEM culture through teacher-to-teacher collaboration. She also will develop a robust robotics program associated with the First Lego League in addition to identifying and applying for school-focused STEM grant funding.

With more than 24 years of experience teaching science, math and technology, Oleszczuk’s vision for the STEM Lab is creating energy and buzz at MSCS. “I am looking forward to working with the students, teachers, and staff of Monsignor Slade. I want to challenge our students to be innovative problem solvers, integrate latest technologies, and build on strong engineering concepts. The new school year will be an exciting opportunity to explore our new STEM Lab, participate in hands-on activities, and learn to solve challenges in collaborative teams.”

The recent improvements and additions underscore Monsignor Slade Catholic School’s commitment to offering a rigorous program in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Enabling students to be proficient in STEM will provide them a foundation in answering complex questions through investigation and developing real world, 21st century solutions. By implementing interactive STEM education opportunities at the elementary school level, these young minds will be better prepared for secondary and post-secondary education experiences and workforce opportunities.

Principal Alexa Cox says, “We could not be more proud to welcome Mrs. Olezscuk to our team. While employing facets of a STEM curriculum has always been a goal of our teachers at Monsignor Slade, the addition of a STEM coordinator and the opening of our STEM Lab will create unrivaled opportunities for our current and future students to Rise Above.”
