Hidden Beauty–a new exhibit now at The Mitchell Gallery

The Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College presents “Hidden Beauty: Exploring the Aesthetics of Medical Science,” an exhibition in collaboration with artists and scientists at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine that features the stunning visuals of medicine and anatomy from a new perspective. Bringing together the opposing fields of art and medical science, the viewer is asked to consider the aesthetics of human disease, a dynamically powerful force of nature that acts without regard to race, religion, or culture. The exhibition is free and open to the public, and will be on view from October 26 to December 10. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, October 29, from 3:30-5p.m.

About the “Hidden Beauty” exhibition:

Each of the exhibit’s works is fascinating, very wonderful, and engaging to the viewer. Many of the images are visually stunning patterns of different diseases that affect mankind. One leaves the exhibit with a great appreciation for biology in general, the wonder of the human body, for medical scientists, the study of the particular type of science they have dedicated their lives to, the technology or talent that enables us to see the image, and last but certainly not least, the artistry behind the image.

This exhibition is a collection of more than 60 photographs that display different diseases affecting various parts of human anatomy. Captured with imaging technology that ranges from spectral karyotyping to scanning electron microscopy, we see intricacies of human disease from fungal hyphae invading a blood vessel to metastasizing cancer cells. The vibrant colors and striking patterns in these images are contrasted with the pain and isolation of human experience. The images explore the power of nature and challenge the viewer to see both the tragedy and the beauty of its inevitable hold on the human body. “Hidden Beauty” will leave the viewer with an understanding and appreciation of the visual aesthetics inherent within the field of modern medical science.
