Anne Arundel County Public Schools AVID Tutoring Program

AVID Tutor Training is being held Mon., Nov. 13, 2017, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.; Tues., Jan. 9, 12–3 p.m.; and, Wed., Feb. 7, 2018, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. The 3-hour sessions are held alternately at the Board of Education (Parham Building) on Riva Rd. in Annapolis and the Carver Center in Gambrills; AVID tutors are needed to facilitate small groups of students during the AVID Tutorials. These students have gone through an application process and have been selected to participate in the AVID Program at their respective school. Tutors will help students be successful by assisting them with problem-solving techniques, working collaboratively with other students, and serving as role models. AVID tutors, age 18 and up, volunteer for a minimum of one hour per week, during regular school hours, at one of our AVID sites. AVID tutors would commit to at least one semester of tutoring in one of our 19 middle schools or 12 high schools. Bello Machre

All during the month of November, 2017, individual volunteers, or groups of volunteers, are needed to rake leaves and to decorate Bello Machre homes for Thanksgiving.  Also, donations of Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets filled with non-perishable foods are needed for both the community homes and support services families in need. Donations of grocery store gift cards would also be appreciated. There is a continuing need for volunteers to help adults with development disabilities improve their reading skills, time commitment of one hour per week minimum, as well as volunteers to help at our front desk, answering phones and helping with other light administrative duties, For more information, and to volunteer or make donations, contact Michele Marshall, Manager of Outreach and Volunteer Services, at [email protected] or 443-702-3064. Office of Secretary of State

The Office of the Secretary of State (SOS) is in need of volunteers to join our team. We are seeking individuals with strong customer service skills to assist with basic Administrative duties including: data entry, scanning, scheduling, Internet research, etc. Training is available. Come join our friendly, high energy staff and be a part of the inner workings of this important government office! Old Mill High School, November 16-17, Mock Interviews

Volunteers are needed to conduct Mock Interviews and provide Career Guidance for all 11th-grade students at Old Mill High on November 16-17 from 7:30 am to 2:15pm.  Help them cultivate real world experience, taking the topics introduced in11th-grade English of résumé writing, interviewing, and networking and practicing them with YOU, our community partners. Jug Bay Post Turkey Trail 5K Race, Nov. 25, 2017

Saturday, November 25, 2017, 7:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Jug Bay Post Turkey Trail 5K Race: Volunteers are needed for course monitoring, registration, refreshments, lining the course and as cheerleaders! This is a great opportunity for individuals and groups to come out and support their community. Shifts available 7am – until events ends (around noon). Join the Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Move More Race Series! Enjoy the beautiful, scenic trails of the Glendening Nature Preserve at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary in Lothian. The trail is all off road with some single track areas. All proceeds from the race go to Recreation Deeds for Special Needs, a local non-profit organization dedicated to making recreational activities accessible to all Anne Arundel County residents. SPAN (Serving People Across Neighborhoods) 

Sunday, November 12, 2017, 8:30 am – 6th Annual Stride for SPAN Turkey Trot: The 5K at Kinder Farm Park starts at 9:00am, followed by a one-mile fun-walk at 9:30am. T-Shirts will be given to all participants and prizes for 3 top 5K finishers in specified age groups. Also there are a variety of ways that you can support and receive acknowledgement as a sponsor or donor for this exciting event. SPAN in cooperation with area churches help persons in their community in need of crisis assistance because of evictions, utility turn-off notices, emergency medical or prescription needs, food pantry or other services. Span needs volunteers to staff the office, work in the food pantry Monday and Wednesday mornings and donate food and other items for the pantry. Get your group to sponsor a food drive or pick up a few extra items when you shop and drop them off at SPAN Mon – Thurs, 10 am – 2 pm. One-time projects such as painting, cleaning windows, moving pantry shelves are also available.  SPAN is located behind Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 400 Benfield Road. The Y in Central Maryland

Thursday, November 23, 2017, 6:00 – 10:30 am, Turkey Trot 5K Run: The Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot Charity 5K is a family event that raises urgently needed funds to support children and families in Central Maryland. We have a total of seven 5k’s across the region: Baltimore City, Arnold, Bel Air, Ellicott City, Towson, Westminster, and Perry Hall.  We have a variety of opportunities on Thanksgiving morning including: 1. Volunteer Coordinator 2. Set-up; 3. Race registration; 4. Packet Pick-up; 5. Food/Beverage Table; 6. Course Post; 7. Mile Sign Holder; 8. Water Station; 9. Clean-up/Breakdown; 10. Odd Job Runner; 11.
