Catherine Herrick honored with Severn School’s 2017 Rolland M. Teel Distinguished Alumni Award

Severn School is pleased to announce the 2017 Rolland M. Teel Distinguished Alumni Award recipient is Catherine M. Herrick, Severn Class of 1986. This award, named for the founder of Severn School, is the highest honor the school bestows upon an alumnus/a. The award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated outstanding service to humanity, service to community, professional achievement, or service to Severn School. Ms. Herrick is the 37th individual member of the Severn community to be inducted.

While at Severn School, Cathie was a dedicated scholar and athlete. She competed on the boys’ soccer team, co-ed swim team, field hockey team, and girls’ lacrosse team. After graduating from Severn School in 1986, Cathie Herrick attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. Cathie was inducted into the Severn School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Kenyon College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. At Kenyon College, Cathie was a record-setting goalie in field hockey and lacrosse, and went on to become Kenyon’s first All-American in field hockey.

Ms. Herrick has had a very successful career as the proprietor of one of the top Washington, DC paid media strategy, planning and buying shops, Buying Time Media. Buying Time Media handles political campaigns, issue/advocacy and branding campaigns that range from The National Association of Education, American Association of Railroads and Dominion Energy. Prior to founding Buying Time in 1997, Cathie got her feet wet in several different top political media consulting firms. In the early nineties, she worked at DSHSD, and was the media director for political media firms Fenn and King Communications and Squier/Knapp/Dunn (SKD).  In 1996, she handled the day to day operations of the Clinton/Gore paid media campaign, as well as the DNC coordinated campaign. Buying Time continued the buying for the DNC in the 2000 and 2004 Presidential campaigns, as well as for Priorities USA, the Democratic Party’s largest Super PAC in the 2016 Presidential campaign. Coupled with these national campaigns, Buying Time has handled marquee Senate, Congressional and Gubernatorial races. In May of this year, Buying Time Media commemorated years of hard work and success and celebrated its 20 year anniversary.

Cathie, her husband Kevin Elion, and their five children live in Annapolis.
