Busy year ahead for Chesapeake Arts Center

Chesapeake Arts Center announces 2017-2018 performing arts season, featuring theater, dance, family drop-in workshops in the new Makerspace, Adult Pop-up choir, meet the artist gallery shows, and concerts. The Chesapeake Arts Center is a 58,000 sq ft. multi-disciplinary art center located at 194 Hammonds Lane, Brooklyn Park, Maryland 21225. Our facility houses a 752-seat Hammonds Lane Theatre, a 120-seat Studio 194 Theatre, gallery space, MakerSpace, dance studios, ceramics lab, music room, and classrooms.

How Do You likeMe Now Productions presents “Heathers- the musical” in Studio 194 Theatre on October 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, and 29, 2017. 2:00pm and 8:00pm showings. Based on 1988 cult film, Heathers. This musical is the story of Veronica Sawyer, a brainy, beautiful misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful clique at Westerberg High: The Heathers- Before she can get comfortable atop the food chain, Veronica falls in love with dangerously hot new kid J.D.. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, J.D has a plan. Admission $22-25

On Saturday, October 21, 2017 the Makerspace kicks off the first family workshop from 10:00am-1:00pm. Create your own Laser Cut Animal Masks. Our family workshops engage the community by providing fun and easy, interactive activities. Our volunteers will be there to guide you and assist when needed! Workshops typically run for three hours, but activities will not take the full time. Families are encouraged to pay what you can, and drop in at any point within this time period to make something and take it home! Pay What You Can at the door!

On Friday, November 11th, 2017, the CAC presents Writers in the Round with Ellis Woodward and Friends at 8:00pm in Studio 194 theatre. Five highly acclaimed, veteran songwriters team up and take the stage for an evening of magic. The show will also include a special guest, Maryland’s own singer/ songwriter, Ellis Woodward. Tickets $10

November 4th at 7:30pm and Sunday, November 5th, 2017 at 2:30pm, Full Circle Dance Company presents Unshamed: Baring Our Secrets and Our Souls in the Hammonds Lane Theatre. Award-winning choreographers examine aspects of secrecy and secret-keeping in this emotionally powerful and physically dynamic performance, which will benefit domestic violence prevention and assistance programs in Maryland. Admission: General $20 | Student (10 and under) & Seniors (65 and under) $15.

The CAC celebrates Veterans Day with a special performance by the United States Navy Sea Chanters concert on Saturday, November 11, 2017 in the Hammonds Lane Theatre at 3pm. Navy Band Sea Chanters is the U.S.Navy’s official chorus. They will perform a variety of music from traditional choral music, sea chanteys, patriotic fare, opera, Broadway, and contemporarymusic. Free Admission.

On Saturday, November 18, 2017, come support the arts! Join us for an intimate performance for guests to sit within a few feet of this singer/songwriter, Belinda Fraley Huesman, accompanied by Colin Rowe. The one-of-a-kind experience includes a reception and post-show talkback with the artist. Proceeds will support the CAC, a community arts center providing affordable arts opportunities to the great Brooklyn Park region. Tickets $100 includes show and reception.

Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 11:00am-2:00pm, AA co. presents World AIDS Day Community Event at the Chesapeake Arts Center. AA co. invites you to experience breakout sessions, personal stories, youth art projects, resource exhibits, and drawings for prizes. Refreshments provided by Hands of Hope, INC. Free and confidential HIV testing will be available through Anne Arundel Dept. of Health. Sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Worlds AIDS Day Committee. Free Admission.

Saturday, December 2, 2017, Transcendent Events presents STORY TIME at 8pm in the Studio 194 Theatre. Baltimore rock bands play full band acoustic with strings and piano. Get ready for goosebumps. Admission $15.00.

On Friday, December 8, 2017 the CAC will be hosting the Inside Maryland: Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn & Curtis Bay Fundraiser & Gallery Exhibition from 6-8pm in the Hal Gomer Gallery. The Launch party for the CAC’s new book celebrating Brooklyn, Brooklyn Park, and Curtis Bay’s History. Authors and photographers will be on-hand to sign books and prints. The gallery will also host the historical and new photos used. Prints will be available for sale. Top by and celebrate the area’s rich history and purchase a book to support the art programs at the CAC. Free Admission.

Jump into the holiday spirt with Spencer Humm’s Baltimore Christmas Special on December 8, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17th, 2017. Friday & Saturday shows at 8:00pm and Sunday shows at 3:00pm in Studio 194 theatre. Baltimore’s most popular Christmas comedy event celebrates its fifteenth season of fun. Join Spencer “Slash” Humm on a journey of outrageous comedy, music, and yuletide merriment. The one-of-a-kind production is known for its juggling, magic, stand-up comedy, musical theatre, and more. Come see what tricks they have up their sleeve for this 15th anniversary celebration! Admission $35-55

The Celebrates the Holidays with a Winter Dance concert & community tree lighting ceremony at 6pm on Saturday, December 9, 2017 in the Hammonds Lane Thetare. CAC dance students in routines that show off their new skills! Then join us in celebrating the season with the CAC tree lighting, hot chocolate, and carols. Free Admission.

Winter Wonderland and Decorations Galore Family Workshop on Saturday, December 16, 2017 in the MakerSpace from10am-1pm. A free winter wonderland event! Laser cut snowflakes, decorate table top trees, paint ornaments, and get holiday ready! Pay what you can.

On Friday, February 2, 2018, the Brooklyn Park Middle School Performing Visual Arts Program (PVA) will be holding a free art show in the Hal Gomer Gallery from 6:00pm-8:00pm. These pieces represent the collective thoughts, beliefs and feelings of these extremely talented young men and women.

Saturday, February 10, 2018, NACPS presents Emancipation Proclamation at 1pm in the Hammonds Lane Theatre. A lively account of the significant events and personalities that bring to life the history of African Americans and their struggle for equality through stories and song.

On Friday, April 7, join us in the Hal Gomer Gallery for the Meet the Artist reception with Photographer, Marti Belcher from 6-8pm. Free Admission. Marti Belcher is a world traveler and photographer. Through her work she explores the spectrum of emotions; joy, passion , fear, anxiety, tenderness, anger, aloofness and more. Her artwork will be on display in the Hal Gomer Gallery from April 3-April 28.

Boom Boom Pow! A comic book themed Gallery exhibit with Ricky Chenoweth & Friends in the Hal Gomer Gallery from 6-8pm on Friday, May 4, 2018. A group art show of comic book artists, illustrators, and fine artists to celebrate this special art form. Free Admission.

Also, SAVE THE DATE for the 5th Annual Arts in the Park festival on August 18, 2018 from 11am-3pm in front of Hammonds Lane Theatre outside. A family-friendly festival of art, music, dance, theatre, and food! Activities for kids of all ages, and lots of wonderful art vendors. Free Admission!

NEW to the CAC! Join us for a high-energy drop-in choir experience for ages 18-99! No experience or training necessary for participants. Professional performer and educator Alysia Lee will lead the group in learning the vocal parts for a variety of songs (different each month) with live musical accompaniment, and at the end of the evening the music be “performed” for a video to be shared online 24 hours after the event. The Pop-Up Choir events are the second Thursday of every month in the Studio 194 Theatre. Pay What You Can.

The center also opened a MakerSpace on September 30th, 2017 and will be offering classes and family workshops.
