AACPS looks to redistrict Maryland City Elementary Schools

| October 18, 2017, 01:15 PM

A committee of parents, community residents, and school system officials is set to begin studying the possibilities with regard to redistricting Maryland City Elementary School students as they transition to and attend middle school.

The committee will study options available, to the extent possible, to better balance middle school space utilizations by potentially moving students in the Maryland City Elementary School attendance zone from MacArthur Middle School to Meade Middle School. MacArthur Middle School is at about 75 percent of state-rated capacity, and projected to be over capacity by 2021. Meade Middle School is at about 55 percent of state-rated capacity, and projected to remain well under capacity through at least 2026.

The study will not involve changing the attendance boundaries for Maryland City Elementary School.

An organizational meeting of the committee will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at Meade Middle School. The committee also is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. on October 17, 2017, at Maryland City Elementary School.

The committee may choose to have additional meetings. All committee meetings are open to the public.  Public input is welcome at all meetings except the organizational meeting.

The committee will make a recommendation to schools Superintendent George Arlotto in November. Dr. Arlotto will forward his recommendations to the Board of Education no later than the first Board meeting in December. The Board will conduct public hearings on the plans before reaching a decision no later than April 30, 2018.

The school system’s redistricting timeline is attached to this email. As meetings take place, more information will be posted on the school system’s web site,
