Midshipmen handle Bearcats, extend home game streak to 16 (PHOTOS)

Navy really needed their defense to handle Cincinnati yesterday and they just did not have it. However, thanks to the offense, they eeked out a 42-32 win that was closer than the scoreboard indicates. This extends Navy’s winning streak at home to 16 games.

Despite Navy coming up with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter,  it seemed the Bearcats had figured out Navy’s defense early in the game. Cincinnati answered one of the touchdowns toward the end of the first and came close to tying the game at the beginning of the second quarter, but settled for a field goal.

The teams alternated for a bit and with 6 minutes left in the game, the Bearcats scored and completed a successful two-point conversion to bring them in striking distance. Navy ended up punting it away setting up Cincinnati for a drive that fell short with a sack of QB Hayden Moore (for a 15 yard loss) and a fumble that was recovered by Navy’s DJ Palmore with 2:14 left in the game. Eventually, the clock ran out on Navy in their final drive with a final score of 42-32.

Navy played a ground game and only passed for 53 yards while rushing for 569 which was 4 yards shy of a new record. 572 is the school record obtained in the game against North Texas in 2007.  This was the first time that Navy has taken on Cincinnati since 1956.
