Annapolis Recovery Walk this Saturday

The sixth annual Annapolis Recovery Walk will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 11 am – 3pm. Registration begins at 11 am, and the walk kicks off at noon. The 1.5-mile walk will be held rain or shine starting at the Stanton Center, 92 W. Washington Street, through downtown Annapolis, around State Circle and back to the Stanton Center.

The SAMHSA 2017 theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Strengthen Families and Communities.” Health and local community leaders have been invited to speak. Guests include community leaders in long term recovery. Each is open to share the journey to recovery and how their lives have changed to become contributing members of their family and community.

The goal is to raise awareness to the surrounding community, families and local business owners and show that recovery is possible. Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.

“The Annual Recovery Walk provides an opportunity for our community to come together and fight back against addiction,” said County Executive Steve Schuh. “Anne Arundel County stands united as we continue to address the heroin and opioid epidemic.”

“Events like the Annual Recovery Walk and National Recovery Month help us all to recognize that help is available to those who are suffering,” Annapolis Mayor Michael Pantelides said.  “It is critical that we educate ourselves and acknowledge the need for treatment and recovery support services, knowing that individuals in recovery can offer countless contributions to our community.”

The Recovery Month campaign is under the auspices of the federal Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and is hosted by Recovery Anne Arundel (Recovery Oriented Systems of Care/ROSC).   Sponsors include Gold: AA County Department of Health, Arundel Lodge, Ashley Addiction Treatment, Gaudenzia, Project Chesapeake, and Serenity Sistas’ Inc.; Silver: New Life Addictions Bronze: Chrysalis House, Evolve Life Centers, and Narcotics Anonymous; and in kind: Anne Arundel County Food Bank, Canada Dry, WNAV and WRNR.

Registration is free and can be done at the event. The first 1000 registered walkers will receive a backpack and the first 250 will receive a commemorative ball cap and recovery swag in their backpacks. Visit www.recoveryannearundel.org for more information and purchase of display tables for the day.

Before the walk, participants will have an opportunity to talk to representatives of local health and recovery resources, and view or purchase items from local artists who support recovery. Everyone is welcome; join your friends and family to celebrate recovery. Enjoy fellowship before and after the walk with giveaways, beverages and healthy snacks available to all walkers.
