Leobardo Jolalpa-Ramirez, sentenced in stabbing death of father

Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams announced  that Leobardo Jolalpa-Ramirez, 23, of Annapolis, was sentenced by Judge Glenn L. Klavans to 15 years in prison for the second degree murder of the defendant’s father.

“The unfortunate combination of mental health issues and the voluntary use of recreational drugs lead the defendant to murder his own father,” said Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams. “I offer my deepest sympathies to the family, who are facing the loss of two loved ones as a result of this tragedy.”
On February 20, 2016, while under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms, Leobardo Jolalpa-Ramirez woke his sleeping mother and asked her to follow him downstairs. The defendant then walked over to his father, Martin Jolalpa-Vasquez, who was sitting on a chair in the kitchen. Jolalpa-Ramirez grabbed the victim by the top of his hair, and stabbed him in the neck.
Jolalpa-Ramirez fled the house while his family members attended to the victim’s wound. Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported the victim to Anne Arundel Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to statements given by the defendant and family, Martin Jolalpa-Vasquez was physically abusive toward Jolalpa-Ramirez and other members of the family. This recurring abuse was violent enough that Jolalpa-Ramirez was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Jolalpa-Ramirez pleaded guilty on July 10, 2017. He was sentenced to 30 years suspend all but 15 years of active incarceration and 5 years of supervised probation upon release.
Judge Glenn L. Klavans presided over the case. Assistant State’s Attorneys Jason Knight and Terri Morse prosecuted the case on behalf of the citizens of Anne Arundel County.
