2017 Annie Award recipients announced

The Arts Council of Anne Arundel County is pleased to announce the winners of the 2017 Annie Awards.  The Annie Awards were created in 2000 to recognize the contributions of local artists, educators, and arts patrons who reside in Anne Arundel County. This year seven people will be honored:

Arts Educator — Helen Smith Tarchalski: pianist, teacher and author, Tarchalski is President of the Anne Arundel Music Teachers Association and on the board of directors of the American Liszt Society.  Keyboardist for the Londontowne Symphony, she has taught at Anne Arundel Community College for over 38 years and is the author of the music education software program Symbol Simon.

Arts Patron — Wally Treiber: A board member of the South County Concert Association (SCCA) since 1975. Trieber has served in multiple executive officer positions in addition to serving as  president for 18 years. Under his leadership membership archives were computerized and fundraising capacity enhanced. Other board positions include: Ballet Theater of Annapolis, Lothian Ruritan Club, Bobs and Girls Home of Maryland and International Club of Annapols.

Literary Arts — Christopher Scotton: author of The Secret Wisdom of the Earth,  American Bookseller’s Association No.1 “Indie Next Pick” for 2015. Critically lauded by reviews in the New York Times and Washington Post, the coming of age novel is set in Appalachia about an act of violence in a small town. The novel deals with important themes that include environmental destruction and family relationships.

Arts Historian—Robert  C. Clark: President and CEO of Historic Annapolis, the sixth generation Annapolitan is a member of the City of Annapolis Heritage Commission and serves on the Board of Friends of St. John’s College, Chair of  the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Board, and is a former Trustee and Chair of Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s retreat home in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Performing Arts –Jeanne Kelly: vocal performer, teacher, conductor, and music administrator. Kelly is founder and Artistic Director of Encore Creativity for older adults Kelly’s operatic performances include: the Washington Opera. Opera Delaware, Central City Opera, Baltimore Opera, Tulsa Opera and Annapolis Opera. Vocal teacher and coach, she has taught at the Levine School of Music, Hood College, and Baltimore School for the Arts and is former conductor of the Women’s Glee Club of the USNA and Georgetown University Choir.

Visual Arts — Yumi Hogan: Maryland’s first lady has exhibited her semi abstract landscape paintings done in sumi ink, acrylic, and Asian pigment regionally and internationally. Advocating for the arts around the state, she is Honorary Chair of the UMB Council for the Arts and Culture in Baltimore. Hogan, who holds a  BFA  from Maryland Institute of Art and an MFA from  American  University,  is an adjunct faculty member of MICA.  Her work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions in addition to juried and group shows.

Lifetime Achievement — Christopher B. Nelson:

Former President of the St. John’s College 1991-2017, Nelson is a national spokesperson for the liberal arts as well as an ardent art collector, generously sharing his knowledge and expertise.  Under his leadership, St. John’s College has supported the arts community of Anne Arundel County through the facilities of the Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 2012, and by outreach community arts programs and exhibits. Board posts have included: Historic Annapolis, Maryland State Archives Commission, Severn School, Special committees on behalf of the County Executive and Mayor.

The awards will be given at a presentation ceremony held at 6:30 p.m. in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at St. John’s College in Annapolis on Wednesday October 18th. For more information, please call 410-222-7949.

The Arts Council of Anne Arundel County provides grant funding and support to over forty nonprofit organizations. Providing a resource for the cultural arts community through advocacy, funding, programming, and promotions; the Arts Council supports a variety of groups that include Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, Anne Arundel County Trust for Preservation, and the Chesapeake Arts Center.  The Arts Council administers the Arts-in-Education Program serving both public and private Anne Arundel County Schools, which provides grant funding to bring performances and artists into auditoriums and classrooms.
