Maryland State Police stop knife-wielding senior citizen in Ft. McHenry tunnel

Maryland State Police and Maryland Transportation Authority Police helped prevent a New Jersey woman from attempting suicide this afternoon inside the Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. today, troopers from the Maryland State Police JFK Barrack received a call to be on the lookout for the 63-year-old woman, who had been reported missing. The woman called her brother from the Chesapeake House before being seen driving southbound on I-95.

Troopers attempted a traffic stop, however, the woman failed to stop and continued driving southbound on I-95. MdTA police assisted with the pursuit and deployed stop sticks prior to the tunnel.

According to investigators, the vehicle came to stop inside the tunnel. The woman exited the vehicle wielding two large knives. MdTA officers on the scene deployed Tasers to subdue the woman, but not before she used the knife to cut her wrist.

The woman was apprehended before any further injuries took place. She was taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for treatment.

No other injuries were reported. Two lanes were closed for a short time in the southbound span of the tunnel.

The investigation continues.
