Hays lifts Baysox to a rain-shortened win

IBaysox Fieldn a game that was called due to rain with no outs in the top of the sixth inning, Austin Hays’ go-ahead two-run shot in the bottom of the third proved to be the difference as the Bowie Baysox (61-56) picked up a 4-2 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (56-59) on Friday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

Ryan Flaherty had singled to start the third before Hays cleared the bases with his 12th home run of the year with the Baysox.

Jeremy Barfield’s two-run shot off of Baysox starter Yefry Ramirez in the top of the first gave Portland an early 2-0 lead.

Ramirez (12-3) allowed the two runs on six hits to go along with six strikeouts in five innings of work.

The Baysox got on the board with a run in the second via back-to-back doubles from Chris O’Brien and Adrian Marin that cut the lead to 2-1.

In the home half of the fifth, Aderlin Rodriguez’s solo home run off of Sea Dogs starter Trey Ballextended the lead for the hosts to 4-2. The home run was Rodriguez’s team-leading 17th of the year.

Ball (5-10) gave up four runs on nine hits while walking three and fanning two in 4.1 IP.

Hays (3-3, HR, 2 RBI, R) and O’Brien (2-2, BB, R) had multi-hit games for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

The series continues on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. with LHP John Means (8-7, 4.20) on the mound for Bowie against Portland LHP Henry Owens (2-3, 5.16).
