Baysox falter late in 4-3 loss

TBaysox Fieldhe Bowie Baysox (58-51) lost a late lead in a 4-3 loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (44-65) on Wednesday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester.

New Hampshire grabbed the lead in the eighth as Alex Monsalve led off with a single, took second on a sac bunt and scored on Richard Urena’s two-out RBI single to tie the game. Urena came around to score on Tim Lopes’ two-out RBI double that gave the Fisher Cats a 4-3 lead.

RHP Scott McGough (1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K) was tagged with the loss for the Baysox and falls to 1-1 on the year.

Trailing 4-3, Bowie had the tying run at second with one out in the ninth, but RHP Dusty Isaacs (1.0 IP, H, K) got a strikeout and a pop out to end the game. Isaacs notched his third save of the year.

RHP Justin Shafer (W, 2.0 IP, H, 2 K) earned the win for New Hampshire with two shutout innings of relief to improve to 4-2.

The Fisher Cats got on the board in the seventh on Lourdes Gurriel’s two-run double that cut the lead to 3-2.

Baysox starter Jordan Kipper (n/d) surrendered the two runs on four hits while walking two and fanning five in 6.1 IP.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when the Baysox started the inning with back-to-back singles from Ryan Mountcastle and Stevie Wilkerson and Cedric Mullins cleared the bases with a three-run shot off of Fisher Cats starter Conner Greene to open up a 3-0 lead. The home run was Mullins’ 10th of the season.

Greene (n/d) allowed the three runs on eight hits to go along with a walk and three strikeouts in six innings of work.

DJ Stewart (2-5) and Wilkerson (3-4, R) both had multi-hit games for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

The series wraps up on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. with RHP David Hess (8-7, 4.41) on the mound for Bowie against New Hampshire LHP Ryan Borucki (0-1, 0.64).
