Baysox drop series opener to Harrisburg

| August 08, 2017, 11:55 PM

ABaysox Field four-run fifth for Harrisburg proved costly as the Bowie Baysox (59-55) dropped the series opener to the Senators (47-66) by a score of 14-4 on Tuesday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

The 14 runs allowed is a season-high for Baysox pitching.

In the afore-mentioned four-run fifth, major league rehabber Michael Taylor hit a three-run blast to give Harrisburg the lead and Dan Gamache came through later in the inning with an RBI single to make it a 5-2 game.

Gamache’s solo shot off of Baysox starter Lucas Long in the top of the second gave Harrisburg an early 1-0 lead.

Long (7-5) allowed the five runs on eight hits while walking two and fanning five in 4.2 IP.

Austin Wynns tied the game at one apiece with a solo home run of his own in the home half of the third. The home run was Wynns’ eighth of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Flaherty hit a solo blast off of Harrisburg starter Austin Voth to give the Baysox a 2-1 lead. The home run was Flaherty’s second in eight games on a major league rehab assignment with Bowie.

Voth (3-1) gave up two runs on six hits to go along with a walk and a strikeout in seven innings of work.

The Senators broke the game open with four runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 9-2. Yadiel Hernandez delivered the big blow in the frame with a two-run double.

All four runs were charged to Bowie RHP Jordan Kipper (2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB).

Flaherty doubled to start the eighth inning and scored on Austin Hays’ RBI single and the latter scored on DJ Stewart’s RBI groundout to bring the Baysox within 9-4.

Osvaldo Abreu’s grand slam off of LHP Tim Berry (0.0 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB) in a five-run ninth made it a 14-4 game in favor of Harrisburg.

Flaherty (3-4, 2B, HR, RBI, 2 R) had a multi-hit game for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

RHP Jason Garcia (1.0 IP, BB) and RHP Jefri Hernandez (1.0 IP) both had a scoreless outing in relief for the Baysox.

The series continues on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. with RHP David Hess (8-8, 4.23) on the mound for the Baysox against Senators RHP Taylor Hill (4-3, 5.54).
