Baysox drop series finale to Thunder, 3-2

Baysox FieldThe Bowie Baysox (70-66) dropped their second straight with a 3-2 loss to the Trenton Thunder (90-46) in the series finale on Thursday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

Trenton grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the first as Mark Payton reached with a one-out double and scored on Garrett Cooper’s RBI single.

In the top of the fourth, Cooper led off with a single, advanced to second on a single and scored when Dante Bichette Jr. reached on an error charged to Baysox 3B Ryan Mountcastle to stretch the Thunder lead to 2-0.

Bichette’s solo shot in the sixth off of Baysox starter John Means made it a 3-0 game in favor of the visitors.

Means (9-9) gave up the three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking one and fanning eight in six innings of work. The eight strikeouts tied a season-high by a Baysox pitcher.

DJ Stewart led off the home half of the sixth with a single, advanced to third on a single and scored on Austin Wynns’ RBI single to cut the Trenton lead to 3-1.

Thunder starter Brody Koerner (6-3) allowed one run on seven hits to go along with three walks and a strikeout in 6.0 IP. RHP Anyelo Gomez (2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, BB, 3 K) and RHP Cody Carroll (1.0 IP, K) combined to close things out for Trenton. Carroll notched his fifth save of the year.

In the bottom of the seventh, Adrian Marin drew a leadoff walk, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball to bring the Baysox within a run at 3-2.

Stewart (3-4, R) had a multi-hit game for manager Gary Kendall’s squad, while LHP Raudel Lazo (1.0 IP, BB) and RHP Ryan Meisinger (2.0 IP, H, K) had scoreless outings in relief.

The Baysox head to Richmond to open a four-game set with the Flying Squirrels on Friday night at The Diamond. First pitch of the series opener is set for 7:05 p.m. with RHP Yefry Ramirez (14-3, 3.68) on the mound for Bowie against Richmond LHP Matt Lujan (4-4, 4.76).
