Annapolis’ Main Street to embark on a 10 month re-construction project

UPDATE: We spoke with Director of Public Works, David Jerrell to see if we could get some details on the construction schedule.

January to March– This will be the stubs for sprinklers. No traffic will be disrupted and the 5o or so buildings will likely have a parking spot or two eliminated for the duration. They anticipate 20 per month. A crew will take up the bricks in the road in front of the building and tap into the water main in the middle of Main Street and then install a pipe to the other side of the curb for future use. They will begin at the top of Main Street.

April to May — Parking will be eliminated on upper Main Street (Conduit to Church Circle) as crews dig up and replace the roadway. Traffic will be allowed up but expect typical construction delays. The road will be replaced with asphalt base.

June to July — Parking will be eliminated on lower Main Street (Memorial Circle to Francis) as crews dig up and replace the roadway. Traffic will be allowed up but expect typical construction delays. The road will be replaced with asphalt base.

August — Parking will be eliminated on middle Main Street (Francis to Conduit) as crews dig up and replace the roadway. Traffic will be allowed up but expect typical construction delays. The road will be replaced with asphalt base.

September — The asphalt base placed in the previous months will be covered with sand and the new bricks will be installed for the finished roadway.

Jarrell said that the City has spoken with 2/3 of the businesses on Main Street and are doing what they can to address their concerns–deliveries, pedestrian access, signage, etc.

The City of Annapolis is embarking on a 10 month construction project beginning in January 2018 to add stubs for sprinkler connections to 50 buildings , to re-brick the street, and relocate a crosswalk. The project is anticipated to be complete before the 2018 boat shows in October.

However, it is not without disruption.  The sidewalks will remain open throughout the construction. However, parking will be reduced along Main Street in sections as the project progresses. It is scheduled to begin at the top of Main Street move down toward Memorial Circle.

The re-bricking of Main Street is a much needed project as anyone who has driven the short road can attest. However, the construction, as with any construction in the area, will disrupt the businesses downtown in terms of reduced parking which is already a contentious issue, and from the perception by customers that downtown is not accessible during the construction. It will be fully accessible, but with some restrictions.  During August 2018, part of the project calls for Main Street to be closed entirely (sidewalks will remain open) from Memorial Circle to Conduit Street.

The Hillman Garage will remain open and accessible if not via Main Street/Gorman Street; it will be open via the Duke of Gloucester entrance.

The Downtown Annapolis Partnership sent out an email earlier today asking their membership to visit the Planning and Zoning Department to review the plans and to offer any design changes. Erik Evans, Executive Director of the Downtown Annapolis Partnership, in his email, said that businesses “have concerns or ideas that have not yet been considered. Please raise concerns, suggestions, etc. now so that there is time to review your input now before the bids are awarded and construction begins.” The Downtown Annapolis Partnership has created a survey available here.
