Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams announced late yesterday that Martin Luther King Jr., 27, of Lothian, was sentenced by Circuit court Judge Laura S. Kiessling to 20 years in prison with the first 5 years without the possibility of parole for first degree assault of his girlfriend.

“I would like to thank Judge Kiessling for showing that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our county,” said Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams. “Mr. King is a repeat offender whose violent behavior leaves those around him in constant danger.”
On October 22, 2016, Martin Luther King Jr. engaged in a verbal dispute with his girlfriend. King became violent and knocked the victim to the floor. He then grabbed her by the sweatshirt, picked her up over his head, and threw her.
Fearing further violence, the victim fled the residence in her vehicle. King entered his own vehicle to pursue the victim. While moving southbound on Southern Maryland Boulevard, King drove into the oncoming traffic lane, pulled up next to the victim, and fired a series of gunshots at her vehicle.
Martin Luther King Jr. pleaded guilty to First Degree Assault and Use of a Firearm in a Crime of Violence on May 12, 2017.
Judge Laura S. Kiessling presided over the case. Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Setzer prosecuted the case on behalf of the citizens of Anne Arundel County.
