Hays’ walk-off single in the 11th lifts Baysox to 5-4 win

Baysox FieldAustin Hays’ two-out walk-off single in the 11th lifted the Bowie Baysox (46-41) to a 5-4 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (35-50) and into first place in the Western Division.

Mike Yastrzemski doubled to right centerfield with two outs in the 11th and scored on Hays’ game-winning single.

Bowie is a season-high five games above .500 and in first place for the first time since April 18.

RHP Carlos Alvarado (0.2 IP, 2 H, R, ER) was tagged with the loss for Richmond and falls to 0-2 on the year.

RHP Jefri Hernandez (1.0 IP, 2 H, K) worked his way out of a two on, one out jam in the top of the 11thto earn the win for the Baysox and move to 1-2.

The Baysox grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first as Yastrzemski reached on an error charged to Richmond SS Rando Moreno, advanced to third on a Garabez Rosa single and scored on DJ Stewart’s two-out RBI single.

A walk and a single put two men on in the third before Myles Schroeder’s two-run double plated both runners and gave Richmond a 2-1 lead.

Yastrzemski’s two-run shot off of Flying Squirrels starter Sam Coonrod in the home half of the inning gave the Baysox the lead right back at 3-2. The home run was Yastrzemski’s fourth in nine games with Bowie, matching his total in 41 games with Triple-A Norfolk.

Trailing 3-2, Richmond had the bases loaded with nobody out in the sixth, but Baysox starter David Hess notched three straight strikeouts to work his way out of the jam and end the inning.

Hess (n/d) surrendered two runs on five hits to go along with five walks and seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

In a two-run seventh, back-to-back singles started the inning for the Squirrels before Schroeder tied the game with an RBI single and a wild pitch from Bobby Bundy (2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K) to the next batter gave the visitors a 4-3 lead for the time being.

Audry Perez drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh, advanced to second on an error charged to Moreno and scored on Adrian Marin’s RBI ground-rule double to tie things at four apiece.

Coonrod (n/d) allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits while walking two and fanning three in 6.0 IP.

Marin (2-6, 2B, RBI, R), Rosa (2-4) and Yastrzemski (2-6, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 3 R) all had a multi-hit game for manager Gary Kendall’s club, while RHP Scott McGough (2.0 IP, BB, 2 K) had a scoreless outing in relief.

The series continues on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. with RHP Matthew Grimes (3-7, 5.02) on the mound for the Baysox against Flying Squirrels RHP Tyler Herb (6-4, 3.31 with Double-A Arkansas).
