Anne Arundel – Annapolis Community Emergency Response Team (AAA CERT)

AAA CERT has announced its summer 2017 dates for Basic 20 hour CERT training. Volunteer to become a trained member of your community in emergency response. The training will be held on Friday, July 28 from 6pm-9pm, Saturday, July 29 from 8am-5pm, and Sunday, July 30, 2017 from 8am-3pm at the Fire Training Academy in Millersville. A disaster simulation will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017 from 8am-1pm at the same location. This weekend course provides you the basic skills necessary to respond to your community’s immediate needs in the aftermath of a disaster, when emergency services are not immediately available.  Learn about disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operation, light search and rescue, CERT organization, disaster psychology, and terrorism and CERT. The cost for the training is $70 which covers the cost for the CERT backpack, bump hat, vest, and small items and supplies which you get to keep at the end of the exercise.  Everyone completing the course receives a nationally recognized certification and the opportunity to join Anne Arundel — Annapolis CERT as a member. For more information and to sign up go tothe web site at: http://www.aaacert.org/. Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks

Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, 6:00 am, Rec Deeds TriChallenge Sprint Triathlon:  This event is being held at Fort Smallwood Park, Pasadena, MD 21122 and consists of a .25 mile swim in the Patapsco River, a 12.5 mile bike through scenic Pasadena, and a 3.1 mile run through the park and surrounding community. Packet pick up and Transition area set up will begin at 6:00am at Fort Smallwood Park.  The race will start at 7:30am. Volunteers are needed starting at 6:00 a.m. on race day for such set up and a variety of other activities associated with managing the event. Hope For All

Hope For All continues to seek volunteers to help on Tuesdays–Thursdays and between 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m, assisting with pickups and deliveries of furniture, clothing, or other donations as well as processing donated goods to help homeless families in Anne Arundel Co. Groups are welcome. We are also looking for volunteers who would like to serve their community by meeting with clients that are referred to HOPE for assistance. Our Intake team is the face of HOPE to our clients, and we strive to be a positive presence as they work to bring stability to their lives. We always send a team of two people to meet with clients. This could be perfect for a husband and wife interested in outreach. Jewish Museum of Maryland

The Jewish Museum of Maryland is dedicated to the interpretation of the Jewish experience in America, with special attention to the collection, preservation, and study of the history, traditions, and culture of Jewish life in Maryland. The Light House, Run for The Light House, Sun., Sept. 24, 2017

Volunteers are needed to assist on race day Sun., Sept. 24, 2017 starting prior to registration at 7:30 a.m., for the Annual Annapolis Run for The Light House. The Annapolis Run for The Light House provides scenic half-marathon, 5K and 1. 25 mi. walks along the trails of Quiet Waters Park and through the beautiful Chesapeake Bay-front community of Hillsmere Shores. The race start is 8:00 a.m., for the Half Marathon, 8:45 a.m. for the 5K Jogging Joe Shafran Memorial Run, and 9:00 a.m. for the 1.25 mi. Donut Dash/Walk. The mission of The Light House is to help rebuild lives with compassion by providing shelter and services to prevent homelessness and empower people as they transition towards self-sufficiency.  Volunteers are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, front desk help and adult education programs. Pro bono professional volunteers are also needed with specialized skills such as accounting, dentistry, licensed therapists, law, and carpentry. The Metropolitan Washington Ear

This organization located in Silver Spring, MD provides free multi-media reading services for visually impaired, blind, or physically disabled people who cannot read print.  They help to bring visually impaired people into the mainstream, rather than segregating them from society.  For information about opportunities, contact 301/681-6636 during business hours or email [email protected], or visit the website, www.washear.org.  Volunteers ages 18 and up can help out in a variety of ways:

  • Readers for the Dial-In Newspaper and Magazine services: Volunteers are asked to take a brief audition and commit to a weekly shift of two hours to read The Washington Post, selections of The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Time Magazine, People, and the Washingtonian Magazines into a computer, which will then be accessed by low vision or blind callers. Readers for the Radio Broadcast: Volunteers are asked to take a brief audition and commit to 2 hours per week to read magazines, newspapers, and other national publications to be aired on our 24-hour closed circuit radio broadcast and our world-wide webcast.
  • Speakers Bureau: Volunteers are needed to speak on behalf of the Washington Ear at local organizations, schools, churches, and to man information booths at local health fairs.  We only recruit speakers from our readers.  If you would like to be a member of the speaker’s bureau, you must first read for us for at least 6 months and become familiar with the organization.
  • Office Help: Volunteers are also needed during office hours for data entry, special projects, or large mailings.

 

Mid Atlantic Community Church (MACC) Food Pantry Garden

The mission of the Food Pantry Garden is to grow organic food for the Crofton Community Church’s Food Pantry and provide up to 25% for those who help grow the garden. Volunteers are needed to help plant, establish, water, weed, and harvest true organic vegetables and fruits. Beginners and experienced gardeners of all ages are welcome, and schedules are flexible; participants can earn community service hours. Help is also needed for food pantry deliveries to the main church pantry in Crofton. The MACC Church and Garden are located at: 2485 Davidsonville Rd, Gambrills, MD 21054.
