Bowie Baysox changing name to Bowie Baysox on July 28th

2016 David Bowie Jersey

For the second straight year, the Bowie Baysox will change their name to the Bowie Baysox to honor legendary rockstar David Bowie for one night only. This year’s David Bowie Tribute Event and 70thBirthday Celebration will be held on Friday, July 28 when the club hosts the Akron RubberDucks at 7:05 p.m. The former Akron Aeros would have probably enjoyed Bowie’s songs “Space Oddity” and “Life on Mars?” in their former incarnation.

The Bowie Baysox (pronounced Boo-ee) will make the ultimate dedication to the British musician who shares a heteronymous last name with the city by becoming the Bowie Baysox (pronounced Boh-ee) for this special night. The team will represent the legendary rockstar with Bowie music, in-game contests and tributes throughout the event. Following the game, there will be a David Bowie themed Fireworks Spectacular featuring all David Bowie music, presented by Johns Hopkins Community Physicians.

The Baysox will also wear special David Bowie-inspired jerseys that will be auctioned off during an in-game stadium auction and post-game online auction. Proceeds from the jersey auctions will benefit the American Cancer Society in honor of Bowie who lost his life to liver cancer. (A picture of this year’s dynamically designed jersey is attached.)

David Robert Jones, better known by his stage name David Bowie, passed away on January 10th, 2016 at the age of 69 after his battle with liver cancer. During his 50-plus year music career, Bowie’s music was influenced by and helped influence dozens of movements, including glam rock, electronica, funk, pop, outer space, etc. Bowie also became famous for his use of alter egos like “Ziggy Stardust”, “The Thin White Duke”, “Aladdin Sane” and even “Jareth the Goblin King” as he rose to superstardom through the 1980s.

The 2017 Bowie Baysox season is presented by Money One Federal Credit Union. The Baysox 2017 season is now underway. Don’t miss out as the team prepares to celebrate its 25th Season. Single game tickets are now available at
