Baysox slide into 1st place after 4-3 win

Baysox FieldMike Yastrzemski doubled and scored on a Garabez Rosa RBI-single over a drawn in infield to break an eighth inning tie in a 4-3 Baysox win in Altoona Thursday evening. The win catapults the Baysox on top of Altoona and into first place in the western division on the first day after the annual all-star break.

The Baysox led early. Stevie Wilkerson homered to straightaway center in the second inning to give Bowie the lead at 1-0. It was his fifth of the year with the Baysox. He would then start a two-run rally with a bunt single in the fifth inning.

David Hess was lights out early working four scoreless innings in 47 pitches while fanning five batters. But he labored in the fifth and sixth innings. Altoona answered the Baysox plating two in the fifth before tying the game in the sixth, Tim Berry (4-0) entered for the Baysox with the bases loaded and one out in a tie game. He got a strikeout with a big curveball and then a groundout to dance out of the inherited jam.

That set the table for the game-winning rally. Yastrzemski doubled to leadoff the inning. Austin Hays then grounded out to the right side moving him to third base. With the infield in, Rosa got his league leading 65th RBI with a line drive single to right.

Scott McGough worked a solid 1 and 2/3rd innings for his third save of the year in his shirt time with Bowie.

The win gives the Baysox first place all alone in the west. They have won six in a row against Altoona and seven of eight this year. Altoona had won the season series each season prior dating back to 2013. Bowie is now 17-6 in their last 23 games.

The series continues with LHP John Means looking for a fifth consecutive win.  Coverage will begin 20-minutes prior to first pitch on wnav.com, baysox.com and via the WNAV, MILB and Tune-In Radio Apps.

Bowie returns home Thursday, July 20th for a big four-game series with Altoona. Fireworks follow the Friday and Saturday evening games. Get tickets at 301-805-6000 or online at baysox.com.
