Baysox, Rubber Ducks, split double header

The Bowie Baysox (42-40) and Akron RubberDucks (40-37) split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park in Akron. Bowie took game two by a 5-2 score, while Akron won game one, 6-1.

The series wraps up on Monday at 7:05 p.m. with RHP Matthew Grimes (3-6, 4.42) on the mound for the Baysox against Akron LHP Thomas Pannone (3-1, 2.01).

Game One

The Bowie Baysox dropped game one of a doubleheader to the Akron RubberDucks by a score of 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park.

Akron grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first as a walk and a single started the frame before Francisco Mejia plated a run via an RBI single. The second run scored later in the inning on a bases-loaded walk issued by Baysox starter Tanner Scott.

Tyler Krieger’s RBI single plated Bobby Bradley in the third inning and gave the RubberDucks a 3-0 advantage.

Scott (0-1) allowed the three runs on four hits while walking three and fanning four in 3.0 IP.

Austin Wynns led off the fifth with a triple and scored on Stevie Wilkerson’s RBI groundout to put the Baysox on the board and cut the lead to 3-1. The triple was the first of Wynns’ career.

Akron starter Michael Peoples (2-3) gave up the one run on five hits to go along with a walk and three strikeouts in six innings of work.

A three-run sixth broke the game open for Akron and made it a 6-1 contest. Joe Sever andMark Mathias each drove home a run with consecutive RBI doubles in the frame.

All three runs were charged to Bowie RHP Jason Garcia (2.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K).

Wynns (2-3, 3B, R) had a multi-hit game for the Baysox and LHP Garrett Cleavinger (0.2 IP, K) had a scoreless outing in relief.

Game Two

The Baysox captured the nightcap of Sunday’s doubleheader with a 5-2 victory over the Akron RubberDucks.

DJ Stewart’s go-ahead two-run shot in the top of the fourth off of Akron starter D.J. Browngave the Baysox the lead for good at 3-2. The home run was Stewart’s 10th of the season and his second in as many games.

Brown (0-5) gave up three runs on five hits to go along with two strikeouts in 4.0 IP.

Bowie jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the first when Cedric Mullins led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Austin Hays’ sac fly.

Bobby Bradley’s two-run single in the home half of the frame opened up a 2-1 advantage for the RubberDucks for the time being.

Baysox starter David Hess (8-5) surrendered two runs on three hits while walking two and fanning five in six innings of work. RHP Lucas Long (1.0 IP, 2 H, K) tossed a scoreless seventh to notch his fifth save of the season.

Five straight singles started the seventh inning for Bowie as Mullins and Erick Salcedo each plated a run to make it a 5-2 game.

Akron brought the potential tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Long fanned Sever to end the game.

Mullins (3-4, 2B, RBI, R), Garabez Rosa (2-4, 2B, R), Salcedo (2-3, RBI) and Stewart (2-3, HR, 2 RBI, R) all had multi-hit games for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.
