Baysox hold on for 5-4 win to take series

The Bowie Baysox (35-37) held on for a 5-4 win and took the series from the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (37-29) in the finale on Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton.

Binghamton had the potential tying run at second with one out in the ninth, but LHP Tim Berry got back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Berry (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 K) got the final six outs for the Baysox to notch his third save of the year.

The Baysox took the lead for good with a four-run seventh that opened up a 5-2 advantage. Adam Brett Walker tied the game with a solo shot off of RHP Corey Taylor before a walk and a single put two men on and Cedric Mullins cleared the bases with a three-run blast. The home run was Walker’s fourth of the year and Mullins’ seventh.

Taylor (2.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, K) was tagged with the loss for the Rumble Ponies and falls to 4-4 on the year.

Champ Stuart’s two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning brought Binghamton within a run at 5-4.

Bowie starter Matthew Grimes (3-6) gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits while walking and fanning a pair over seven innings of work.

The Baysox grabbed a run in the second to take an early 1-0 lead as Walker reached with a one-out walk and scored from first on Audry Perez’s RBI double.

Binghamton starter Corey Oswalt (n/d) allowed the one run on four hits to go along with two walks and three strikeouts in 6.0 IP.

Stuart’s two-run shot in the home half of the frame gave the Rumble Ponies a 2-1 advantage.

Perez (3-4, 2 2B, RBI) and Stevie Wilkerson (2-3, BB, R) had multi-hit games for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

Austin Hays went 1-4 in his Double-A debut for the Baysox.

Bowie heads to Erie to open a three-game set with the SeaWolves on Friday night at UPMC Park in Erie. First pitch of the series opener is set for 7:05 p.m. with RHP Jesus Liranzo (1-3, 6.04) on the mound for the Baysox against SeaWolves LHP Tyler Alexander (3-5, 4.98).
