Rosa’s big day pushes Baysox past Squirrels

Baysox FieldINF/OF Garabez Rosa tied his career-high with four hits and drove in four runs as the Bowie Baysox (16-14) won their third straight with an 8-4 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (11-17) on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond in Richmond.

The four-hit game for Rosa (4-5, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R) is the eighth of his career and his first since 7/27/16 vs. Hartford. The four RBI are the most since knocking in five on 4/16/16 at Akron.

Bowie jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second on the strength of Rosa’s two-run shot off of Richmond starter Matt Gage. The home run was Rosa’s fourth of the season.

In the top of the fifth, three consecutive Baysox singles loaded the bases with one out before Adrian Marin knocked home a pair with a two-run single to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Rosa led off the sixth with a single, advanced to second on a single, took third on a flyout and scored on Jay Gonzalez’s sac fly to give the Baysox a 5-0 lead.

Gage (0-3) allowed the five runs on nine hits while walking two and fanning one over 5.2 IP.

Bowie starter Tanner Scott (n/d) surrendered one hit to go along with six strikeouts over his three innings of work.

Richmond got a pair back in the home half of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-2 as Dylan Davis knocked home a run with an RBI double and later scored on Tyler Horan’s RBI groundout.

Both runs were charged to Baysox RHP Jason Garcia (2-0) who allowed the two runs on three hits while walking three and fanning three in 2.1 IP. RHP Ryan Meisinger (2.0 IP, 2 H, R, ER, K) got the final six outs to notch his third save of the year.

The Baysox quickly answered back with a run of their own as Marin got things started in the seventh with a triple and later scored on Rosa’s RBI groundout to make it a 6-2 game in favor of the visitors.

RBI singles from Miguel Gomez and Eliezer Zambrano over the next two innings brought the Flying Squirrels within 6-4.

Bowie responded with a pair of insurance runs in the ninth as Rosa delivered an RBI single and Aderlin Rodriguez plated a run of his own with an RBI groundout to open up an 8-4 advantage.

Marin (2-4, 3B, 2 RBI, R) and Tucker Nathans (3-5, 2B, R) also had multi-hit games for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

The Baysox head to Reading to open a three-game set with the Fightin Phils on Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading. RHP Matthew Grimes (0-2, 3.98) will toe the rubber for Bowie against Reading RHP Thomas Eshelman (3-0, 3.10).
