Baysox drop heartbreaker in the 9th

Baysox FieldHartford scored three in the ninth and the Bowie Baysox (22-23) dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker to the Yard Goats (21-22) on Tuesday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

Drew Weeks’ two-run single off of LHP Tim Berry (1.0 IP, H, BB, K) in the afore-mentioned top of the ninth gave Hartford a 7-6 lead. The inning had started with a walk and a hit by pitch before Max White knocked home a run with an RBI double.

All three runs were charged to Baysox LHP Garrett Cleavinger (0.2 IP, H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, K) who was tagged with the loss and falls to 0-2 on the year.

RHP Matt Pierpont (3.0 IP, 2 K) did not allow a hit over three shutout innings for Hartford and earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. RHP James Farris (1.0 IP, 3 K) struck out the side in the ninth to record his seventh save.

The Baysox took the lead with a three-run third to open up a 4-2 advantage for the time being. A single and a walk started the frame before Adrian Marin plated both runners with a two-run double and Marin scored two batters later on Garabez Rosa’s RBI single.

Yard Goats starter Jack Wynkoop (n/d) allowed six runs on nine hits while walking four and fanning three in four plus innings of work.

Hartford had taken an early 2-0 lead on Dillon Thomas’ two-run shot off of Bowie starter Tanner Scott in the top of the second.

DJ Stewart cut the lead in half with a solo shot in the home half of the frame, his seventh home run of the year for the Baysox.

Scott (n/d) gave up the two runs on two hits to go along with two walks and five strikeouts in three innings of work.

In the bottom of the fourth, 2B Steve Wilkerson delivered a solo shot in his Baysox season debut to extend the lead for the hosts to 5-2.

White drew a two-out walk for the Yard Goats in the fifth, advanced to second on a single and scored on Ryan McMahon’s two-out RBI single to bring the visitors within 5-3. On McMahon’s RBI single, Wilkerson cut downAshley Graeter at the plate to end the inning.

The Baysox made it a 6-3 game in their half of the fifth as Rosa drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a single, went to third on a forceout and scored on Wilkerson’s RBI infield single.

Weeks had knocked home a run with an RBI single in the eighth to cut the Bowie lead to 6-4. The run was charged to RHP Miguel Castro (4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K).

Marin (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R), Aderlin Rodriguez (2-4) and Wilkerson (3-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) all registered multi-hit games for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

The series continues on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. as RHP Matthew Grimes (0-4, 3.89) will be on the bump for Bowie against Hartford RHP Konner Wade (1-3, 3.86).
