Middle innings doom Baysox in loss to Richmond

In a game completed after eight innings due to rain, the Bowie Baysox (8-6) dropped a 12-2 decision to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (6-8) on Thursday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

Richmond scored nine of their 12 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

For the second straight night, the Baysox struck with a run in the bottom of the first asCedric Mullins led off with a bunt single, advanced to second on an Austin Wynns single, took third on a double play and scored on Aderlin Rodriguez’s RBI single.

Richmond took a 2-1 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. Slade Heathcott led off with a single and later scored when Chris Shaw hit a ball that went through Rodriguez’s legs at first and rolled down the right field line. Shaw came around to score when the next batter Hunter Cole delivered an RBI double.

In the top of the fifth, the Flying Squirrels plated three runs with two outs to extend the lead to 5-1 as Shaw, Brandon Bednar and Gomez all knocked home runs with RBI singles in the frame.

Austin Wynns’ solo shot off of Richmond starter Andrew Suarez in the home half of the inning brought Bowie within 5-2. The home run was Wynns’ second of the season.

Suarez (1-2) gave up the two runs on eight hits to go along with three walks and four strikeouts in 7.0 IP.

The Flying Squirrels would answer back with four runs in the sixth to open up a 9-2 advantage.

Bowie starter David Hess (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits while walking two and fanning five in five innings of work.

Gomez delivered a three-run shot in the eighth off of RHP Jon Keller (1.0 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB) to give Richmond a 12-2 lead.

Wynns (2-2, HR, RBI, R, 2 BB), Aderlin Rodriguez (2-4, RBI) and Garabez Rosa (2-4) each had a multi-hit game for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

The Baysox will return to action on Friday night when they head to Harrisburg to begin a three-game set with the Senators. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. as LHP Tanner Scott (0-0, 1.50) gets the ball for Bowie against Harrisburg RHP Austen Williams (1-1, 4.09).
