Severna Park teens partner up with Backpack Buddies to create “Coats for Kids” at Tyler Heights

Severna Park High School Leadership Institute members, Lily Evans and Gracie O’Connor, lead the effort to provide winter gear to students through a Coat Drive at Tyler Heights Elementary School on November 18th, 2016.

The Coat Drive was created as their capstone project for the SPHS Leadership Institute, a program designed to raise up future leaders of this community and beyond. After two semesters of curriculum, members are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to complete their capstone project. Leadership Institute seniors partner with an organization of their choice to design a project to serve the community around them. Lily Evans and Gracie O’Connor worked with the Backpack Buddies Program at Tyler Heights Elementary School to introduce a new project this year, “Coats for Kids.”

Specific children at the school with heavy needs are included in the Backpack Buddies program which provides the children with consistent meals. The kids eat free/reduced lunch and breakfast every day at school. The Backpack Buddies volunteers gather every Thursday night to pack a bag full of food to keep the kids fed on the weekends.

Lily Evans and Gracie O’Connor, assisted by a group of sophomores, planned and operated a Coat Drive at the school, just before Thanksgiving break. With the help of community members and local businesses donating winter gear, they were able to provide a coat, hat, and gloves, to all 53 children in the program.
