Brooklyn man sentenced to 10 years for stabbing mother

states-attorneyAnne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams announced today that Paul Tond, 32, of Brooklyn, was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Michele D. Jaklitsch to 20 years with 10 years of active jail time for First Degree Assault after stabbing his mother in the chest while she slept. Tond pleaded guilty on September 15, 2016.

“This man was convicted for multiple prior violations of protective orders and two prior assaults,” said Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams. “I am grateful that Judge Jaklitsch recognized the threat he poses and held him accountable for viciously attacking his own mother.”

On April 16, 2015, officers responded to a call about a stabbing. Police found Mr. Tond’s mother suffering from a stab wound on the left side of her stomach. Ms. Tond was found alive and was able to tell officers that her son had attempted to steal her prescription medications, specifically her percocet pills. Ms. Tond informed officers that she slept with the medications under her clothing because her son had attempted to steal her medications before. During this incident, Mr. Tond punched his mother in the face several times and then exited the bedroom returning with a non-serrated silver steak knife and proceeded to stab her in the torso. Ms. Tond told her son they needed to call 911 for help, but he would not allow her to use the phone nor leave the residence. After a time of Ms. Tond screaming and begging her son to allow her to leave, Mr. Tond moved away from the door and she fled to a neighbor’s home.

Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Setzer prosecuted the case on behalf of the State. Judge Michele D. Jaklitsch presided over the case.
