The Annapolis Cotillion Committee is pleased to announce the return of the cotillion for the 2016-2017 season. The cotillion is an instructional program in ballroom dancing and social etiquette for students in grades 5 through 8. Registration for the current season continues through Friday, December 9.

The Annapolis Cotillion originated in the 1950s. In 1960, the renowned Betty Huckenpoehler, former dance instructor with Fred Astaire, began teaching and continued until her passing in 2015. Ann Alsina began assisting Mrs. Huckenpoehler in 2011 and is now the Director. Mrs. Alsina received her ballroom training from American Ballroom in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Annapolis Cotillion’s mission is to teach young people responsibility, respect, and proper etiquette. Basic ballroom dance helps build self-confidence in young people and teaches appropriate boundaries. The goal is to teach traditional etiquette, which in turn prepares them for positively interacting with adults and peers. More importantly, these skills provide the poise to handle any social situation with grace and confidence.

This season’s cotillion consists of seven dances now through March. Each event is conducted on a Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. Etiquette is taught from 7:15 to 7:45 by Diane Cookson, President, Manners for Life-Etiquette for Success. Ballroom dancing instruction follows from 8:00 to 9:15. The 2016-2017 cotillion season tuition is $190 per student; second sibling is $160.

“My daughter has loved her cotillion experience, and we have loved seeing the increase in her self-confidence since she has joined. What was at first an exciting yet somewhat intimidating experience quickly became a new group of friends, an excuse to dress up, and a new set of skills that she mastered, from dance steps to manners and increased comfort interacting with adults. We can’t wait to get our younger son involved,” says parent Ashley Fuchs.
