What’s New with Events

First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare — In partnership with the Annapolis Shakespeare Company (ASC), St. John’s College is Maryland’s host location for the national tour of “First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare” from November 1 through December 4. The first complete collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays was published in 1623, seven years after his death. Compiled by two of Shakespeare’s fellow actors, it preserves 36 of his plays. Without it, 18 of the Bard’s works would have been lost, including “Macbeth,” “Julius Caesar,” “Twelfth Night,” “The Tempest,” and “Antony and Cleopatra.” Read More

What’s New with Attractions

Annapolis Shakespeare Company — After two years of staging performances at its theatre in Annapolis’s Design District, Annapolis Shakespeare Company has signed a lease on a new location at 1804 West Street in Annapolis. The performing company officially opens the doors at its new facility on January 27, 2017 with a performance of the Thornton Wilder classic, “Our Town”. A high-tech version of “Alice in Wonderland” will open on March 10. Founding Artistic Director Sally Boyett says audiences will be walking into a performance/audience space that’s double the size of the former location. Overall, the 8,102-square-foot property is triple the size of its current 2,300-square-foot building. Read More

What’s New with Restaurants and Dining

Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant held a grand opening celebration for its first Maryland location in May 2016. The restaurant at 1906 Towne Centre Blvd. at the Annapolis Towne Centre offers a signature menu with a selection of dishes designed to pair perfectly with wines created in Cooper’s Hawk’s private winery. Cooper’s Hawk is committed to providing sophisticated food and exceptional wines in an upscale casual dining atmosphere. www.coopershawkwinery.com, 443-837-9989.

Rams Head Dockside held a grand opening celebration in July 2016. Located at the site of the former Reckless Ric’s Bar and Grill at 1702 Furnace Drive in Glenn Burnie, Maryland, Rams Head Dockside can accommodate more than 400 guests. Updates to the restaurant include new indoor and outdoor furniture, signage, landscaping, flooring, ceiling and interior and exterior paint. Located on the Patapsco River, the restaurant has dockage for boats, allowing guests to arrive by water or by land. Read More

Rice Workshop has been serving Vietnamese street food to its patrons ever since it opened its doors at 138 Main Street in Annapolis in July 2016. The independent, quick casual, family-operated restaurant features sandwiches and rice paper wraps as well as rice and noodle bowls accompanied by a host of fresh herbs and vegetables. Read More

What’s New with Accommodations

Home2™ Suites by Hilton Arundel Mills BWI Airport held a grand opening in September 2016. The new Hanover-based extended stay property features spacious suites with flexible layout options. The property offers free Wi-Fi, a media hub and the “Working Wall”, a moveable work/dining table. The full kitchens come complete with a microwave, refrigerator, dishes and more. Read More

Live! Hotel – In September 2016, the Cordish Companies broke ground on the new $200 million flagship Live! Hotel at Maryland Live! Casino adjacent to Arundel Mills Mall in Hanover. The 350,000-square-foot property will feature a 17-story hotel tower, making it the tallest building in Anne Arundel County. The newest addition to Maryland’s largest gaming facility will feature 310 luxury guest rooms; a state-of-the-art event center with a 1,500-seat concert venue; meeting spaces; new dining options; and a day spa/salon. Live! Lofts – in September 2016, the Cordish Companies launched Live! Lofts, the newest name in hospitality. The flagship Live! Lofts is being born from a newly acquired hotel property at 7491 New Ridge Road in Hanover, Maryland, just minutes away from Live! Casino & Hotel and BWI Airport. In early 2017, the building will undergo an extensive $3 million renovation that will transform it into a property of eclectic elegance, featuring first-class accommodations, amenities, service levels and décor synonymous with the Live! brand nationwide. What’s New with Unique Venues

Historic Whitehall – In spring 2016, Historic Whitehall began making its grounds available for weddings and corporate events. Located at 1915 Whitehall Road in Annapolis, the National Historic Landmark held its first wedding in June 2016. The 135-acre site features 1.5 miles of shoreline along Whitehall Creek, Meredith Creek and Whitehall Bay. Read More

What’s New with Retail

A Touch of Fancy – Beginning November 17, 2016, owner Bonnie Cruea will be offering a blend of old and new, upcycled, repurposed and handmade furniture and gifts at her 31 Maryland Avenue store in Annapolis. Patrons of her store will be treated to a selection of art, home décor and accessories designed to “suit your fancy”. The shop features 750 square feet of retail space filled with painted furniture, decorative accessories and hand-painted original artwork. Read More

Annapolis Bookstore – Established in 2004, the Annapolis Bookstore has operated from several locations on Maryland Avenue in Annapolis. A ribbon cutting was held at its newest location at 53 Maryland Avenue in October 2016. Owner Mary Adams and Yarn Basket owner Carmen Jalkh opened the doors of their shared 53 Maryland Avenue space in August 2016. Read More

Evergreen Antiques at 69 Maryland Avenue is now Evergreen Antiques and True Vintage. The oldest antiques shop in Historic Annapolis is under new ownership! Joanna Masterson Young and her husband Geoffrey opened their store in July and held a grand re-opening celebration in September 2016. Read More

Local by Design opened at 109 Main Street in May 2016. The shop is home to the creations of more than 60 local artisans handpicked by owners Suzi Jett and Susan Sears. Among the artisans whose work is featured at the shop are 12 who create at Gallery 3976, a 3,500-square-foot shared working studio space that Jett founded a few years ago in the Annapolis Design District. North Sails Apparel opened its first U.S. location in Annapolis, Maryland at 110 Dock Street in Harbor Square in August 2016. The store features outerwear for men and women with innovative and advanced materials, one-of-a-kind sailing accessories, waterproof bags, swimwear, pants, shorts, dresses, t-shirts, knits and polo shirts. Old Fox Books and Coffeehouse is slated to open at the site of the old Annapolis Bookstore in November 2016. Owners Janice Holmes and Jinny Amundsun will be selling a curated selection of new and gently used books. Her redesign of the 35 Maryland Avenue space gives it more of a coffeehouse feel, complete with a community table that invites individuals to gather there with friends and share ideas. Read More

Yarn Basket – After two years of operating her business on lower Maryland Avenue, owner Carmen Jalkh relocated her shop to 53 Maryland Avenue and opened in August 2016. The new location, a shared space with the Annapolis Bookstore, offers more retail space. In addition to carrying an extensive inventory of well-known, high quality commercial yarns, the shop carries local, hand-dyed yarns and fibers for knitting, crocheting and spinning. Read More

Annapolis Urban EvenTours – In collaboration with Visit Annapolis & Anne Arundel County (VAAAC), Annapolis Urban EvenTours began distributing a discount coupon booklet to its patrons in April 2016. The perforated piece features discounts from 21 local merchants. Read More

BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport – In September 2016, a scorched piece of aluminum from the façade of the World Trade Center’s Tower One was placed on permanent display at BWI Thurgood Marshall, the first U.S. airport to have screening officers. Read More

BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport – Spirit Airlines has announced plans to begin offering daily nonstop flights to/from BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport to Fort Myers Southwest Florida International and Tampa International Airports on November 10, 2016. Read More

BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport – Individuals with time on their hands at BWI Marshall Airport can put it to good use by learning hands-only CPR in about five minutes at a Gate B7 interactive kiosk installed in June 2016. Read More

BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport – In October 2016, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the launch of a new mobile app at BWI Marshall designed to reduce the amount of time arriving international passengers spend in customs. Read More

Sadona Salon and Spa is slated to open at 15 West Street in downtown Annapolis on November 15, 2016. Owner Donna Brown is an esthetician who brings seven years of hands-on experience to her luxury, full-service salon and day spa. The Anne Arundel County native is taking the natural approach to hair, skin, nails and body treatments.  Read More

Significant Anniversaries

Annapolis by Candlelight celebrates its 25th anniversary with its Friday-Saturday, November 4-5, 2016 event. The annual self-guided walking tour of private homes introduces individuals to some of the city’s finest architecture. Read More

Boatyard Bar & Grill celebrated its 15th anniversary in October 2016. Federal House Bar & Grille is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2016. The restaurant at 22 Market Space in Annapolis continues to wow patrons with 24 craft beers on tap. At any given time, about 14 of them are local Maryland brews. It could be argued that Federal House has the largest craft beer lineup of any independent restaurant in Annapolis! Read More

Four Rivers: The Heritage Area of Annapolis, London Town and South County will celebrate its 15th anniversary on November 10, 2016 during its 13th Annual Heritage Awards event in the Blue Heron Room at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. Read More

Maryland Day – The 10th Annual Maryland Day Celebration will take place Friday-Sunday, March 24-26. Sponsored in part by the Four Rivers Heritage Area, the 2017 event is being coordinated by the Chesapeake Children’s Museum in partnership with a variety of participating museums, heritage sites, and local businesses. U.S. Naval Academy – June 30, 2016 marked the 40th anniversary of admitting women into the U.S. service academies. To commemorate the event, the U.S. Naval Academy opened a new exhibit at the Naval Academy Museum, “Ability, Not Gender.” Read More

Kudos and Accolades

In October 2016, Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis was named a Best Dog Park in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice contest. The nominees were selected by an expert panel and voted into winner spots by the public.

In August 2016, Thrillist announced that BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport was number one on its list of the “Top 10 Most Surprisingly Great Airports in America.” Read More

In the summer of 2016, RentLingo.com ranked Annapolis as the second Most Charming State Capital in the nation. Read More

In October 2016, Greater Greater Washington named Annapolis one of Ten Little Cities near DC with awesome Urbanism. It noted that “Annapolis was an impressive town years before DC existed”.
