Ignite Annapolis
On Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016 from 7 – 9 pm at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, learn why the Ignite Annapolis mantra is “Enlighten Us But Make it Quick”. At Ignite Annapolis#2, 16 artists, technologists, thinkers and personalities get 5 minutes and 20 slides to have fun and spark new conversations and collaborations across cultures and disciplines. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary
We are launching a white-tailed deer spotlighting program to help us monitor the deer populations at our properties. Spotlighting occurs the last Wednesday of every month an hour after sunset. Be prepared for cool temperatures and being outside in a slow moving vehicle. Next date: November 30, 5:30pm – Meet at the Visitors Center. Email [email protected] to register. Leadership Anne Arundel is currently accepting applications for its Neighborhood Leadership Academy, a free program consisting of six monthly sessions beginning January 14, 2017, for current and emerging grassroots leaders residing in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. The academy provides residents with essential skill-based leadership training and important governmental and corporate connections to transform their communities. National Electronics Museum
In 2012 the National Electronics Museum and the Society of Satellite Professionals International embarked on an initiative to create a new permanent exhibit titled “SATELLITES TRANSFORM OUR LIVES”. Visitors will experience the history and future of Satellite Communications, Space Navigation, Remote Sensing & Strategic Surveillance, and Weather Satellites while learning about the pioneers in satellite development. An outreach component will help recruit students to the satellite industry and provide a forum for the civil, military and governmental space world in interact new ways. Volunteers are being sought to help build the new exhibit starting in late fall 2016 and continuing into spring 2017. We’d also like to hear from retirees from the industry who have stories about satellites or the satellite industry or receive donations of books on this subject. North Arundel Health and Rehabilitation Center
Volunteers are needed to assist Center residents in various ways including helping bring them to and from activities (and helping with some of those activities), reading to residents, playing cards/games (especially bingo), visiting rooms, passing meal trays at meal time, etc. Our program allows flexibility, so we can work around a volunteer’s schedule. Most of our activities occur from 9:30am to 5pm, with a lunch break in between. We occasionally have evening activities too until 8pm (usually Tues/Thurs). Oncology Foundation of Maryland/District of Columbia
The Oncology Foundation of Maryland and the District of Columbia is a nonprofit organization, composed of community volunteers who want to make a difference in cancer education. The Foundation was founded by the Maryland/DC Society of Clinical Oncology, a state society, affiliated with the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Power Hawks Robotics Club, Inc.
The Power Hawks are a group of adult mentors, volunteers and students dedicated to the practical education of future engineers based in Edgewater, MD. These motivated students annually design and build a robot to compete regionally and nationally in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition and Tech Challenge. The Power Hawks improve their science, technology, engineering, and math skills, learn to cooperatively problem solve and develop self-confidence, soft-skills and leadership.

Stanton Community Center
The Stanton Community Center serves as a community resource that provides children and adults with recreational and cultural enrichment opportunities and health, medical, therapeutic, and counseling services. The center displays historical portraits of Annapolis’ diverse community and features many offices, a multi-purpose gymnasium, commercial kitchen, fitness area, historic classroom, media center with computers, and two conference/meeting rooms. Volunteers, age 18 and up, are needed as academic tutors for elementary, middle and high school students in the After School Homework Program on Monday through Thursday, 3:00-6:00 p.m. from September–June to help with homework, core subjects, school projects and academic skills. The program ends with a Homework Club Banquet to recognize students for their in-school academic accomplishments and for their after school Homework Club academic accomplishments. Tyler Heights Elementary School
Volunteers are needed to run a “book group” for first and second grade English Learner students during the students’ lunch hour or recess period at Tyler Heights Elementary School. This would involve reading a book to a small group of students while they are eating and then discussing it. The school would also like to host a Maker Space club for our students after school. We would like volunteers who would enjoy leading a small group of students through a fun, thought-provoking STEM challenge activity.
