AACPS begins study to redistrict Annapolis area schools

aacpsA committee of parents, community residents, and school system officials is set to begin studying the possibilities with regard to redistricting schools on the Annapolis Peninsula, a task that includes students at all schools in the Annapolis cluster as well as those students who live north of the South River but attend Edgewater Elementary School, Central Middle School, and South River High School.

The committee will study options available to alleviate overcrowding, to the extent possible, and to best utilize space at schools throughout the cluster. It also will consider the impact of enrollment at the new Monarch Annapolis Public Contract School, which is scheduled to open in August.

An organizational meeting of the committee will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at Rolling Knolls Elementary School, located at 1985 Valley Road in Annapolis. The committee also is scheduled to meet from 7 to 9 p.m. on the following dates:

  • December 6, 2016, at Georgetown East Elementary School
  • December 13, 2016, at Germantown Elementary School
  • January 3, 2017, at Mills-Parole Elementary School
  • January 10, 2017, at Bates Middle School

The committee may complete its work in fewer meetings than those currently scheduled. All committee meetings are open to the public.  Public input is welcome at all meetings except the organizational meeting.

The committee will make a recommendation to schools Superintendent George Arlotto in January. Dr. Arlotto will forward his recommendations to the Board of Education on February 1, 2017.  The Board will then decide what, if any, plans to take to public hearing and solicit public input on those plans before reaching a decision no later than April 30, 2017.

The school system’s redistricting timeline can be found by clicking the link below. As meetings take place, more information will be posted on the school system’s web site, www.aacps.org.
