AACC seeks middle schoolers for math competition

Math ConfusionIf you are a middle school student who enjoys math or is good at problem-solving, sign up to participate in a national mathematics competition on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Anne Arundel Community College. The competition is free, but pre-registration by Sunday, Oct. 30, is required.

The American Mathematics Competition 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics, focusing on problems that can be solved using middle school mathematics concepts. It is open to all students in grades 8 or below and under 14.5 years of age as of Nov. 18.

The event aims to spur interest in mathematics and to develop talent through friendly competition at timed problem solving. In 2015 across the United States, Canada and other schools abroad, more than 150,000 students from more than 2,500 schools participated. Sponsored by The Mathematical Association of America, the competition emphasizes mathematical and logical reasoning rather than formulas and computation, so calculators are not allowed.

Details concerning the 2016 AMC competitions are available on the AMC website:  www.maa.org/math-competitions. Information on participating at AACC is available at www.aacc.edu/math.
