“Well that server swap was fun” …. said no one ever

servercrashDo you want the good news first or the bad news?

  • The good news is that we seem to be reliably back up and working on a brand new server.
  • The bad news is that it was a hellacious 2 weeks to do something that should have taken 48 hours.

Technology gets old really quickly. The server we were using was ancient–2012 and it was time to make a change. We worked with out local IT guys and our server management and all was set. We pushed the button, we made the switch, we turned it on. And poof!  Something did not work.
After a bit of tinkering, we got it back up, but it was acting odd and we were not confident. We would be good for a few days and then a crash that woudl take us down for a few hours. Finally, last Wednesday, there was one of those vague error messages that did not sound good. Indeed it was not.
The new server had a major issue and we needed to purchase yet another server and start from scratch which necessitate us being offline for 2 full days.  On Friday morning, the wheels began to churn again and finally we were up and running by noon.

The bad news is that the backup we used to restore the site was dated September 29th. During the up and down times from the first new server, we weren’t able to get a reliable backup and the articles published the first two weeks of October were lost. If you sent us anything that should have been published but did not–please re-send and we will get it scheduled.

But as it looks now, we are back in business.  There are a few more tweaks that will be implemented in the coming weeks while we monitor the new server.

We apologize for any inconvenience.
