Annapolis Fire Department seeking new firefighters

annapolis fire departmentIn September of 2016, the City of Annapolis Fire Department was awarded a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant (SAFER) through the Department of Homeland Security. This two year grant will provide direct funding to the fire department to hire and provide for the salary and benefits of 12 new entry level fire fighters at no cost to Annapolis residents. The new fire fighters will allow the department to staff a ladder truck that was eliminated when department staffing was cut in 2010. Additionally, the new fire fighters will increase the department’s ability to comply with national staffing, and operational standards and more importantly reduce response times to emergencies.

The Annapolis Fire Department invites local Annapolitans and others to apply for the position of firefighter. City wide recruitment efforts are currently underway. (All Wards are having a recruitment event – details forthcoming from Ald. Budge). The department is looking for highly motivated individuals who want to serve their community. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and graduated high school or passed the General Educational Development (G.E.D.) test. Applications will be accepted beginning October 21st, at 9:00 a.m. Only the first 300 will be accepted.  Applicants will need to pass a written examination, an oral interview, a physical ability test and a background check. Applicants passing all phases of the hiring process and who are selected for the position of entry level fire fighter will need to successfully complete a 26 week fire academy and 1 year probationary period.
