Maryland’s young lawyers to hold gala to benefit One Love Foundation

yeardley-loveEach year, the members of the Maryland State Bar Association’s (MSBA) Young Lawyers Section (YLS) work together to raise funds for charity. This year’s YLS Chair, E. Regine Francois, Esq., has announced her selection of the One Love Foundation as the beneficiary of the Section’s fundraising efforts, to culminate with the 26th Annual Charity Gala, which will be held in the spring of 2017.

The One Love Foundation was founded by Sharon Love following the death of her daughter, Yeardley Love. On May 3, 2010, Yeardley Love, then a senior lacrosse player at the University of Virginia and three weeks shy of her graduation, was killed by her ex-boyfriend. The Foundation seeks to honor Yeardley Love by bringing an end to relationship violence through educating, empowering, and activating campus communities in a movement for change.

“Advocacy for victims of relationship violence has been a focus of my legal career since being admitted to the bar; my first job as an attorney was with the House of Ruth, where I represented hundreds of survivors of relationship violence,” says Francois. “During my tenure as Chair, I knew that I wanted our charity fundraising efforts to benefit an organization focused on ending relationship violence. I was so empowered by the message of the One Love Foundation, I knew our members would want to join the movement.”

The Foundation is very appreciative of the Section’s fundraising efforts. Katie Hood, CEO of the One Love Foundation, states, “We are incredibly grateful to have been selected as the charity beneficiary by Ms. Francois and the members of the Young Lawyers Section of the Maryland State Bar Association. We are honored to see others who are passionately involved in ending relationship violence join our movement, and are very excited to work together in the upcoming year.”

In addition to the Annual Charity Gala in the spring of 2017, the YLS will also support the One Love Foundation by participating in its Yards for Yeardley program, where members of the Section will work together as a team to run one million yards in 30 days. “My favorite thing about the Young Lawyers Section is the boundless energy of our members,” says Francois, “I am looking forward to seeing that energy channeled into the Yards for Yeardley challenge, and celebrating at the Charity Gala in the spring.”

The Maryland State Bar Association is a voluntary, non-profit membership organization comprised of approximately 24,000 attorneys and judges. The MSBA monitors judicial and legislative issues, offers legal education opportunities and promotes leadership within the legal profession. The MSBA offers public service programs to ensure the delivery of quality legal services to all citizens and is committed to furthering the efficient administration of justice and equality for all.
