LSO opens 13th season with “The Classical Legacy”

James NickelExperience the power of live music and community engagement in this exceptional concert at 3 PM on September 18 at Riva Trace Baptist Church. This opening concert by the LSO kicks off the season of “Bringing the Classics Back to Life!”

No better way than to start with the “Classical Symphony,” Symphony No. 1, by Prokofiev, one of his most popular and beloved works. Sergei Prokofiev wrote this symphony in 1917 to imitate the style of Haydn and, to a lesser extent, Mozart. It is just enjoyable.

Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 1, featuring James Nickel from the National Symphony Orchestra, will follow. This horn concerto has become the most frequently performed horn concerto written in the 19th Century because of its beautiful and enchanting melodies. James Nickel is a friend of the LSO and last performed with the orchestra in 2012.

The concert concludes with Beethoven’s melodic Symphony No. 7. At its premiere in 1813, Beethoven was noted as remarking that it was one of his best works. The second movement, Allegretto, has been most popular and had to be encored immediately at the premier. The instant popularity of the second movement has resulted in its frequent performance separate from the complete symphony.

Tickets are available at www.lso-music.org, at (410) 562-8920 or at the door. Students are always FREE, General Admission tickets are $20 and Seniors are $15. Season tickets are also available. For more information about the LSO visit lso-music.org.

The LSO is central Maryland’s community orchestra comprised of local professionals, teachers, military musicians, exceptional amateurs and students. They play for the love of making high-quality music for themselves and for their listeners. The LSO is directed by Dr. Anna Binneweg, last year’s winner of the Annie Award for the Performing Arts presented by the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County.
