Box of Rain, one of the largest youth development organizations serving disadvantaged children in Annapolis, is expanding its programming to provide more in-depth and continuous mentoring opportunities to our town’s neediest youth.

“Board Chair Anne Harrington and the Box of Rain Board join me in welcoming Meredith Adams Krissoff into a position that is tailor-made for her talents,” announced Executive Director Karen Colburn. “Through her strong maritime connections and daily high touch with the population we serve, Meredith will truly have her pulse on the needs of these children and a unique perspective on the programs that will best move them forward.”

An active sailor, coach, and Eastport resident, Meredith embodies Box of Rain’s maritime spirit. Since 2003, Box of Rain has offered 50 or more youth each year a free 7-week summer camp that introduces kids to a variety of maritime experiences—sailing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, bay environmental study, and lots of beach fun! Kids learn maritime skills and team work in a mentoring environment that relies heavily on the generosity of our town’s maritime industry and resident volunteers.

Meredith already knows many of our Box of Rain children through her special education and teaching positions at Annapolis Middle, Central Middle, Georgetown East Elementary, High Roads Academy, Oakwood Elementary, and Tyler Heights Elementary where she will be teaching this year. She will complete her Master of Arts in Teaching and Special Education next year.

Meredith already feels like a family member of Box of Rain, having spent many hours this summer with our kids and Summer Director Candace Brown, and working with an expert team of education, counseling, and career professionals to deliver a soon-to-be-announced new program this Fall through some of our local area schools.

Box of Rain was founded in 2003 to honor the memory of Lee Griffin, a dedicated sailor and Annapolis community member who was the victim of a violent crime. Its mission is to:

  • Nurture self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment
  • Develop life skills that strengthen character and opportunities for social engagement
  • Encourage civic responsibility that leads to positive contributions to our community
  • Create pathways to independence and career success
