Anne Arundel County Public Library officials announced a new 3-D printing service at three of its locations. Customers can now print objects using the Library’s new 3-D printers at minimal cost at the Annapolis, Glen Burnie and Odenton Regional branches.
“The library is about innovation and creativity and this new 3-D printing service enables customers of any age to experience the latest technology in a low-cost way,” said Library CEO Hampton “Skip” Auld.
Library customers can use websites like Thingiverse to select a premade design or create their own object using open source CAD software like Tinkercad. After creation, customers should save the file in .STL format and bring their design on a flash drive to the Annapolis, Glen Burnie or Odenton libraries to see it brought to life.
The cost to print is $.25 per gram with a minimum cost of $.25 per print. Payment is required at the time of the request. Customers can estimate the cost of the printing by using free, open source Cura software. Simply upload the file and the weight will be calculated.
The library uses PLA plastic filament on Lulzbot Mini printers. The maximum print size is 6” x 6” x 6” (though printing to this maximum limit may reduce quality). Objects print in a single color and the only accepted file format is .STL. See the Library’s website for the complete printing policy.
