Fifty-six (56) residents displaced after their four story senior living facility fills with smoke after a small fire in a common area known as the “piano room.”
A staff member from the Kris Leigh Catered Living Facility in the 800 Block of Ritchie Highway called 911 to report smoke in the hallway at 4:46pm.
Firefighters arrived to the four story building to find smoke on several of the floors. Due to the size of the facility, a second alarm assignment was requested. This brought a total of sixty-eight (68) firefighters from Anne Arundel County, Annapolis, and the Naval Academy to assist with evacuation and to mitigate the incident.
A small fire, which was contained by the sprinkler system, was located in a common area and extinguished within minutes by firefighters. All residents were evacuated from the facility or sheltered in rooms where there was no smoke. No injuries were reported during the evacuation from residents and there were no firefighter injuries.
At this time, the staff of Kris Leigh is contacting family members to arrange for temporary housing for the residents. For those residents that family is unable to accommodate, Kris Leigh Catered Living is arranging for accommodations at their other facilities in Davidsonville and Gambrills.
Members of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit are currently on location investigating the cause of the fire.
There is no estimate as to the cost of the damage at this time nor is it known when the facility will reopen.
