Meteorologist Justin Berk to traverse the State for 3rd time to raise money for children with cancer

Trek3_DonateOn August 7, 2016, Meteorologist Justin Berk will hike and bike over 300 miles across Maryland in just one week to raise awareness and funds for Cool Kids Campaign and their programs for children with cancer.

This will be Justin Berk’s third year crossing Maryland from tip to tip, having raised over $50,000 in the past two years. Each day of the trek starts with a 27 mile hike and then roughly 14 miles on his bike. Berk’s goal for this year’s trek is to raise another $50,000 for Cool Kids Campaign.

The trek will begin on Sunday, August 7 at the top of Wisp Resort in Western Maryland and end on Saturday, August 13 at the Inlet of Ocean City. Each day will be dedicated to a local Cool Kid affected by cancer and those stories will be shared on Berk’s Facebook page which boasts over 200,000 followers. These photos and stories of the children help raise a significant amount of awareness to the real kids behind cancer statistics. Berk will be joined each day by a different group of Trekkers. Each trekker will also be fundraising before and during the journey for Cool Kids Campaign.

Berk, formerly with Baltimore news stations, WBAL and WMAR, started his involvement with the Cool Kids Campaign by launching a classroom education fundraiser called Wind For Change in 2010 which has raised over $125,00. Berk’s inspiration to help Cool Kids came from his own personal experience when he was misdiagnosed with cancer in his leg at the age of 14.

“My goal is not only to raise money to support Cool Kids, but I also want to help kids going through their cancer treatments realize that they have a full life ahead,” said Berk. “A childhood illness can be scary, but it can turn into a source of strength.”
