The tough season continued for David Hess and the Bowie Baysox Wednesday evening. The Baysox dropped tonight’s game 7-4, and are now at a new season-low 18 games below .500. The Baysox loaded the bases and came away with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the late rally fell short.
David Hess has struggled in the first inning of his outings all season. Tonight was no different. In the top of the first inning, Richard Urena hit a one-out triple to center field and scored on a two-out wild pitch to give the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead.
In their next at bat the Fisher Cats were on the attack again. Ian Parmley hit a lead-off single to left field and Shane Optiz followed with a one-out home run off the foul pole in left field to make the score 3-0.
Joey Terdoslavich led off the bottom half of the second inning with a solo home run to right-center field off New Hampshire starter Wilmer Font to make the score 3-1.
Roemon Fields hit a lead-off single in the fifth inning to right field and went all the way to third after a stolen base and throwing error by catcher Chris O’Brien. With one out, Urena plated Fields with his second triple of the game and he then scored when Dwight Smith Jr. reached on a fielder’s choice ball to second base to give the Fisher Cats a 5-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, Urena continued his monster night and hit his third triple of the game to center field off Baysox reliever Scott McGough. Smith Jr. followed with an RBI double to left field and Rowdy Tellez then walked. Ryan Lavarnway brought another run home with a single to left field to make the score 7-1 before reliever Parker Bridwell replaced McGough on the mound to finish the inning.
In the bottom half of the seventh Terdoslavich hit a lead-off double to right field off New Hampshire reliever John Anderson and Henry Urrutia followed with a single to right field to put runners on the corners. Sharlon Schoop followed with a single to left field to plate Terdoslavich and make the score 7-2.
In their final at bat, the Baysox threatened to mount a huge rally. Urrutia hit a lead-off single to center field off reliever Alonzo Gonzalez and the next two batters walked to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Urrutia to score before Chris Smith replaced Gonzalez on the mound. With one out, Adrian Marin grounded into a force out at second base to bring a run home and make the final score 7-4
Hess threw five innings and allowed five runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one in the loss. McGough threw 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Bridwell threw 1.2 scoreless innings, not allowing a hit and striking out one batter. Reliever Jimmy Yacabonis struck out two as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Font earned the win for New Hampshire, throwing six innings and allowing one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
The Baysox homestand concludes with a day game against New Hampshire Thursday at 11:05 a.m. RHP Matthew Grimes (1-3, 4.55) gets the start in the series finale and he will be opposed by RHP Taylor Cole (3-4, 3.83).
