County to invest $820K into senior center

Senior Photo (5)Keeping with his commitment to improving the quality of life of all county residents, County Executive Steve Schuh announced $820,000 in planned improvements to the Brooklyn Park Senior Center on Hammonds Lane.

“The flagship our senior center network lays here at the Brooklyn Park Senior Center.,” said Schuh. “This proposed revitalization and refurbishment will improve the quality of life for our seniors.”

The increased investment will fund essential upgrades like an additional activity room to accommodate more classes, and installing a vestibule to put reception and check/in in a separate room than the main lobby area.

The Department of Aging will meet with officials from the Department of Public Works to begin the planning on the improvements the week of August 8th, with construction to follow thereafter. The funding for the project was part of the FY 2017 capital budget, which went into effect July 1st.

Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center started in the basement of the Brooklyn Park Library with only a few participants.  As the membership grew, so did the need for additional space.  In 2000, in partnership with the Brooklyn Park Middle School, the doors of the current location were opened.

The first senior center located within a campus setting, the Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center is attached to the Brooklyn Park Middle School on the opposite side of the campus from the Chesapeake Arts Center. The center serves the Brooklyn Park community extensively, and is also a home to popular cultural events.
