Baysox endure a walk-off loss

baysox In the first time in the Baysox 24-year history, the team played a road game at home and watched an opponent enjoy a walk-off at Prince George’s Stadium. Wearing their road gray uniforms, the Baysox jumped out to an early lead only to falter in a 12-inning affair against the Hartford Yard Goats, 4-3.

Oddly enough, the Baysox led off the game and immediately had their bats rolling. Julio Borbon hit a lead-off infield single to shortstop off Hartford starter Carlos Hernandez and Garabez Rosa followed with an RBI double to center field. Chance Sisco then brought Rosa home with a single and fielding error by Omar Carrizales in center field to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead.

The home team, Hartford, responded with a run of its own in the first inning.  Omar Carrizales hit a lead-off infield single to shortstop off Baysox starter Brandon Barker and he moved to second base on a ground out. Dillon Thomas followed with a single to right field to put runners on the corners before Noel Cuevas singled to center field to bring Carrizales home and make the score 2-1.

In the bottom half of the second inning, Juan Ciriaco hit a one-out single to left field and scored on a Michael Benjamin double to left field to tie the score 2-2.

Both starters settled down nicely as the game did not see the next run until the seventh inning.  Ciriaco hit a lead-off single to left field off Baysox reliever Stefan Crichton and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Rosell Herrera drew a two-out walk and Dillon Thomas followed with the go-ahead RBI single to left field to give the Yard Goats a 3-2 lead.

The Baysox responded immediately. Drew Dosch tied the game 3-3 with a solo home run to right field against Hartford reliever Rayan Gonzalez.

Both teams threatened to take over the game, but were not able to plate any runs until the bottom half of the twelfth inning. With Baysox reliever Tanner Scott on the mound, Benjamin singled to lead off the inning. With one out, Herrera followed with a single of his own, but Benjamin was thrown out trying to stretch at home plate. With two outs, the reigning Player of the Month Noel Cuevas gave the Yard Goats the victory with the walk-off base-hit.

Barker threw six innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking one in the no decision. Crichton threw two innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out one and walking one batter. Reliever Jimmy Yacabonis also threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two batters. Scott was credited with the loss after throwing 1.2 innings and allowing one run on four hits while striking out two batters.
