Yard Goats sweep Baysox in afternoon play

Baysox 2016Bowie was routed by the Hartford Yard Goats, 8-3, who successfully completed the three-game series sweep of the Baysox early this afternoon. The Baysox were 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base. With the defeat the Baysox are now a season-low 16 games under .500. 

The Eastern League’s best hitter, Raimel Tapia, led off the game with a double to center field off Baysox starter John Means. Pat Valaika moved him to third base on a sacrifice bunt before Rosell Herrera plated a run with a two-out single to left field to make the score 1-0.

The Baysox grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jay Gonzalez hit a lead-off single to third base and moved to second base on a Sharlon Schoop single to second base. With one out, Garabez Rosa singled to left field to bring a run home and moved to second base after a throwing error by Herrera in left field. Quincy Latimore then plated Schoop with a sacrifice fly to give the Baysox a 2-1 lead. 

The second inning was the turning point of the game. Graeter hit a lead-off single to center field and moved to third base after a Jackson Williams single and Schoop throwing error. Juan Ciriaco brought Graeter home on a groundout to second base before Tapia singled to shortstop to put runners on the corners. Tapia stole second base and then Valaika brought two runs home with a double to left field. With two outs, Herrera singled to left field to plate the final run of the inning and put the Yard Goats up 5-2.

Noel Cuevas led-off the fifth inning with a single to right field and Herrera followed with a walk before reliever Scott McGough replaced Means on the mound. Ryan McMahon then singled to center field to score Cuevas for their and give the Yard Goats a 6-2 lead. 

In the top of the seventh frame, reliever Tanner Scott came in to pitch for the Baysox and walked four of the five batters he faced, allowing one run to score while recording one out before being replaced on the mound by Jimmy Yacabonis. Yacabonis induced a pair of groundouts, allowing one additional run to score as the Yard Goats scored their seventh unanswered run and extended their lead to 8-2. 

In their final at bat the Baysox would plate a single run.  Garabez Rosa and Quincy Latimore hit back-to-back one-out doubles off of Hartford reliever Shane Broyles to plate a run and make the final score 8-3.
